I was in 78. Lots and lots of hunters in the area this year. No one I talked to saw or killed an elk. Some mule deer of course. Weather was good, snow, cold, except for the wind a few days. I was surprised.

I found it interesting the deer seemed to be moving down in the mornings and up at night...usually it’s the other way around...

I find it really hard to believe an outfitter in unit 24 had 28 guys not see an elk???Cmon let's be real!!!
When I was there In first season I came across a few groups who had been in the elk in unit 24 but they were way up high and about a 7 mile hike back in there and it was all a Non motor vehicle area. Very tough to reach them without a horse.

I got there 3 days before 1st Rifle and found a flat spot to pitch a tent in Colorado, that was a success in itself . If ya go deep enough the toy haulers can’t get there with their load of Rzr’s

I have not believed what outfitters and guides tell me about animal reports for almost 20 years. They have no reason to tell you the truth. I've caught them lying to me too many times.

I'm guilty of this myself. People I run into on the trail ask, or ask while I'm spotting hows it going. My response is usually that "we're trying."

We got 2 bulls, 2 cows and a buck.

I have GPS # for a monster deer, within 4-5 miles of the bears ears. Did not have a tag and he is a tank..

Only bull in range, only elk in range. Day 8 of the 9 day season. Hard hunt.

I posted on the 1st season thread that I dropped him off at the processor Sunday at 9AM and picked him up partially frozen at 4PM the same day, if that gives you an indication on how slow it was...68542225-64E8-4316-9EFA-67162F06FA7E.jpeg

I shot a decent 5x5 bull last Sunday and filled my buck tag on Saturday. I found more elk than decent bucks this year. We normally process our own but don’t have the time right now to do both so I went to a processor friends have used in the past. Luckily he made some room so he could take them but they had a sign on the door that they weren’t taking any more animals. His coolers we packed w/ elk. Just depends where you go I guess. I know a lot of people did pretty well this archery season. This snow should make 3rd season interesting, we ended up with about 20 inches at the house from Monday through Wednesday.

We shall see. I believe the current fad of big game hunting will inevitably wane when the gloss of a Fresh Tracks video crosses paths with the reality of living on a mountain. We haven't even had a bad storm yet.
I think you're right. Kind of like golf boomed when Tiger was in his prime, then totally waned after a few years when all the noobs realized how hard it actually is.

I've been hunting OTC tags my entire life and I would have to disagree. Hunter numbers have been steady to increasing for the last 30 years.
