Rarely hear women talk about doing it. Usually it's always men that get the publicity for it.

Was wondering if it had more to do with diet, or...
I really don't know. Maybe the GI doc that chimed in earlier will opine.

My redneck guessing is that it seems that overall, IME, men are very reluctant to get medical care. Especially when it comes to anything in that area. Or less likely to seek it. Even me, having had two different cancers at two different periods of time i resist. Why? idk. I'm an idiot at times and i just want to be normal in some way.

Edit

It seems there is a very high associated with higher stress and cancer. GI for sure. Men generally endure much higher rates of stress than women so maybe that has some to do with it?

Someone educate me. Why is it more of a "thing" for men to have to do this and not women?

Asking honestly. What's the reason?
Women do indeed do this and they also discuss it in their worlds.

My mom is 85y/o and in great health, but thankfully they caught her cancer early and removed a substantial part of her colon.
Needless to say that my sibs and I are higher risk. Probably many here with similar circumstances. Exams are imperative!

Scheduled my first one for may 12. As far as woman doing it, I don't think it would be issue. Guys like to joke about our bowels movements but woman (our moms) have probably changed 75% of all our diapers, whether in old age or as babies.

Good on ya, FCG.

I remember this guy anchoring ESPN back in their pre-woke days when I watched 'em.
His dying wish was that everyone get the damn exam.

Dont get me wrong, I ain't looking forward to it. But It is a piece of mind that we have come so far in medicine that doctors can specialize in finding cancer in a procedure like this. Who goes to med school and says I want to be the "assman" (sienfeld episode). And like I said, guys always joke around about poop, but woman have always had to deal with it.

I guess I was that guy but we are “colon” guys not ass. Colorectal surgeons deal with some real nasty anal canal stuff (abscess, hemhorroid, etc) amongst other things whereas gastroenterologists (colonoscopy specialists) do the scope work when the colon is clean. We also deal with the entire GI tract, esophagus, stomach, and pancreatobiliary organs as well. We treat medical problems like crohns/ulcerative colitis, heartburn, swallowing problems, and many many other things.

It’s a very diverse job; hospital, clinic, routine stuff, emergencies, a good mix. Not a boring sit in the clinic all day gig.

It is really good to see the understanding of colorectal cancer risk and prevention from a broad largely non-medical group on RS. It’s common and preventable, get the scope done.

I am not trying to insult you. I understand the importance. I was just refering to a Seinfeld episode. And commenting on how men don't think women can deel with the "poop" factor. If you read my whole comment you will see how much respect I have for the whole sciense (
spelling) to prevent cancer, If I didn't feel this way, I wouldn't be getting colonoscpy.

If a doctor at a standard walk in clinic hadn't checked my prostate at 37, I would have never known I was stage 3 colarectal cancer. You GI guys are awesome and I've thrown some curve balls at you guys and there's always been a solution.

What I learned over the last year is how much stress can affect your guts. From your throat to your ass.

Thank you for what you do.

I had taken no offense at all, oh the joys of the internet and reading typed messages. I get the question all the time from patients "who would want to do this" but what patients perceive we do and what we actually do are often very different. It's not a gross or dirty job. I like it, again no offense.

Being proctologists, The cleanse the day before, is it to the point of having to be by a toilet or will I have some control? I have been told I might as while hang out in the restroom. I am just wondering if I can still go do things around town. I don't get to town very often. I have total respect for your profession. This very important and can help in prevention in something that can be fatal. I like humor to make things easier to deal with things I don't want to do but need to.

Stick around home. Once things start rolling you’ll have enough time to get from the living room to the bathroom but being out around town is playing with fire.

Funny you say “proctologist”; I don’t even know what that is. It is used to refer to prostate doctors (urologists), anus and colon/hemorrhoid doctors (colorectal surgeons) and rectum colon/scope doctors (gastroenterologists). If you try to search for a local proctologist or a proctology training program you get a mix of answers and basically nothing specific. We joke about it at work that no one knows what it is! Too funny.

Tomorrow....for both wife and me. Our first. Colon issues run in my family so I'm overdue.
Just chugged round one of the purge juice, good lord--gack! Waiting for the purge now....

Anyone else gotten the probe lately?
Va told me I had cancer and had to get one at 25/26. I woke up from the twilight shit. Seen inside my booty hole on the cameras. Farting in front of three hot nurses and the chick that took me was fun. To top it off it was a hernia and I don’t have cancer (that I know of yet). Thanks VA keep doing the lords work.

Did it last year. The hardest part is fasting for 24 hours but once you start drinking the juice the hunger subsides. It's nice to have the peace of mind. I know of a few people who have died from colon cancer.

Thanks for the explanation. Everyone who has worked hard to gain their professional status deserves respect. I am just glorified laberour. Can't even spell that right. But I do know after this procedure is done, I want the doctor to say everything is good and you dont need to see an oncologists. Thank you. You chose a useful important profession that goes unsung but is really important because it helps us live healthy and extend pour lives.

Hey Brian, yep, just got home. Firstly, congrats on a solid exam, glad you also did this!

Hopefully not TMI here.......for us, wife was perfecto in there, I had two small polyps removed. Doc said they looked benign and very common variety (1 outta 4 @ 50y/o plus have them.)
First time ever being under--propofol for the win--a bit groggy coming around. FIfteen minutes of mild fog, and then all good. Very happy to have peace of mind and the procedure behind us.
Seven years recommended for my next scan, ten for wife.

Hope this thread helps with awareness. The importance can't be overstated.
tryied to find a WOHOO emoji. No luck. Thank you for an important old guys thread. This treatable if caught.Very happy everything was good.

Stay very close to the crapper. When the juice starts taking effect, you better be able to get to the toilet fast.
When I had mine I got the entire gallon down and never had to go. Called the doc at about midnight because of I didn't go, I figured they wouldn't want to run the roto rooter up there. He seemed like he didn't believe me. Finally he's like why don't you try going for a walk? Sometimes that gets things going. Worst advice anyone has ever given. Ever.

Got my first this morning. The preparation between fasting and laxatives was miserable, and uncertain. I read that 25% of the procedures are terminated early and rescheduled due to poor prep results. I was examining the yellow water last night in the attempt to discern sufficient clarity. Thinking about repeating it kept me up more than dreading the thing! With the anesthesia I couldn’t tell what was going on. So the procedure wasn’t bad. The IV poke was the worst part to be honest.
