I dealt with this three weeks ago. The cold wasn't a help (in the 20s), but the real problem was a lack of maintenance. Corrosion was bad on all four terminals but two much worst than the others. It was so bad the battery had almost lost connection because of the corroded terminal. Didnt realize how bad it was until I pulled it apart in the NAPA parking lot and it fell apart. Replaced the connector and all was good.

If I had done just the basic check prior to going I would have discovered it prior and not had an issue.

Having lived in the North Dakota and MN my whole life best piece of advise is to buy the biggest/best battery that will fit in your vehicle. Have it LOAD tested every year before season. After 3-4 years, don't count on it. Make sure your vehicle doesn't have any electrical draws. Even simple things like cell phone charging cords should be disconnected when you are going to leave your vehicle for days on end. I agree with backing it into the wind. For no other reason than keeping ice and snow from packing the front end in solid. Last thing to add to your kit is a lithium booster pack like mentioned earlier. The only thing I would add is to buy a quality unit like a Schumacher brand. The cheapy stuff sold at Walmart are junk and cant be counted on for REAL cold weather. They might work for a weak battery down south but don't get it done in REAL COLD weather. Prepare just like you do with the rest of your gear- to the highest level you can. IF all else fails, phone a friend.
