Looking for advice on best week/weeks to bow hunt this unit. I'm just a midwest whitetail guy that has hunted Elk a total of 6 days....ever.
Took my first and only trip to this unit in 2012 with a buddy that had hunted 54 a couple of times in the past before it went to a draw unit. So he knew the area somewhat and was a great teacher. We hunted the 08/30-09/04 that year which was the second weekend after the opener. We saw several elk and I actually had a slam dunk opportunity at a 5X5...........Well...........I...uh........missed..............I've got a whole explination for that, but we can save that for a good laugh some other time.
So I'm heading there again this fall for a little redemption and trying to decide if I should be there for the opener, wait a week or two, or head out at the tail of muzzy? I'd love to be there closer to rut, as I have'nt experienced that yet. You guys think it's better to be there before a crowd that is educating them? Or deal with more people possibly and be there closer to rut. We will be no closer than 5 miles from the nearest trail head.
Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.
