Not trying to hijack this thread but I’m a little confused on how the leftover limited license process works. I understand they don’t go on sale until 9am Aug 2nd in person, on the phone, or through mail. Being that I’m over a thousand miles away the latter two are my only options. Is there any advantage waiting until Aug 2nd and calling in vs just mailing a request? The unit I’m looking at only has a couple tags so I know the chances of actually getting one are extremely slim but I’d like to have a better understanding of how the process works.

If I am out of state and never bought a tag in CO, do I need to do anything online first to make my call go faster/easier? I feel like it would be a long call setting everything up otherwise.

Any tag that takes more than 10 points on an average year to draw goes to the next person in line to draw the tag.

Your theory goes out the window with 3 unit 61 tags leftover. The reason so many draw archery tags are available is because yesterday was the 30 day cutoff for turning them back in. You'll likely start seeing more later season draw tags show up as we approach that 30 day window.

This year will border on ridiculous. A couple years ago I went to a Walmart at 0830 the morning of the 0900 sale, and there were already dozens and dozens of people in line in the store for the leftover sale. For these tags.......people might be camping out like Black Friday.

You can buy them online after august 2nd. You will have to try and call in on August 2nd morning if you want to try to get a tag that will go quick. I would call in now and set up a Cid number for yourself so it can be as stream lined as possible. The units that only have a few tags that are reissue tags will go in the first few minutes. They have tried to change this to allow for more out of state hunters to have a chance but still have yet to do so.

I talked to my local dow, local cpw office, and denver office months ago about all this. You can read the official language as well if you would like.

10 or more points will be reissued to next in line. The 61 bull tags are for 2nd season not 1st. 61 2nd doesn't average over 10 points for the last 3 years. Any hybrid tag is also a way you can tell.
Definitely worth it to watch as the seasons get closer.

I'm very annoyed that I selected "Send me an OTC Elk tag if I don't draw" as I would be camping down at the Denver office next week for some of these tags. I could attempt an exchange, but I feel like that will be too slow.

Its only tags that took 10 resident points to draw in 2007/8/9 that were hybrid eligible that they are calling people for. I don't know why the hybrid tags aren't updated every year. Its really stupid to see some of these tags on this list.

I also wonder if somehow, people are/were working the return tag / point restore system somehow. There's just way may more tags for good units returned than I would have ever guessed.

I can only come up with one logical scenario for this, and its pretty silly. There could have been an organization out there that was TRYING to reduce the number of hunters in the field / make point creep worse. Until this year, that would mean one less hunter in the field.

Sorry man, but right on the page you linked shows you are wrong. Its not the previous 3 years, but the years 2007 / 2008 / 2009.

There are tags for EE061O1A listed on there, which took residents 12 PP to draw this year. Because that hunt was not over 10 in those years I listed, its not eligible for the hybrid draw, and thus the reissue tags are freely available.

Its all about money for the DOW. They were getting, on average, about 9,000 returned tags a year. Why not re-sell them so people can go hunting. Its a revenue generating deal, and its also good for sportsman.

Hell, my deer unit is showing 3 leftover tags. Yet it takes me two years to draw now and has for the last 6 years. Not sure how that is the case.

Tags were turned in and Reissued. Leftover and Reissues are both on the same list.

Just to be clear, I am very happy to CPW decided to put these tags back out there. I'm just annoyed that I can't get in on it because I already have an OTC tag. Live and learn, next year I buy my OTC tag AFTER the reissues are gone.

They should be refunding money for turned in tags before they start selling them again. I have yet to receive my refund for the tag I returned.

You can still get one. I just called because I'm in a similar situation. They will do an exchange at the same time. So you can buy a different tag & turn in the one you have all at the same time. At least that's what they told me...

But... this transaction/ exchange has to happen at their office, so any great tag will probably get scooped up by someone without a license on file before you can get to an office to get it done. Of course my information is only as good as the customer service rep I spoke to.

I called this morning and got the same response FWIW from 2 different people. But, like you mentioned, the top 5% of tags will be gone thru a quicker transaction.

Must only be based on Resident point requirement as I see numerous NR tags that take more then 10 points. But really I think a rule like that should only be based on resident points.

All of you that are crying about the DOW aka Parks and Wildlife in Colorado need to understand that this is the first time that returned tags are being resold on a first come first serve basis. If you think that you are going to scoop up the unit 61 tags or any of the prime tags by standing in line even if you are the first person in line. I am sorry to tell you that you have about a 1% chance of that. The license go on sale at 9am. So anyone who has access to a machine be it at Wal-Mart, bass pro, cabbalas or JOE BLOWs bait show who sells licenses in colorado will all have their info punched in by 8:59am and as soon as 9am hits they will send their info on. The first 3 received asking for the unit 61 tags will get them and the rest will receive a message saying that their is no tags available for that code... Its like hitting the lottery... So don't waste your time standing in line hoping you are going to get one even if you are the first person in line at a DOW office. By the time they greet you and ask you what tag you would like they will be sold... I just spent time at the Main office off broadway talking to ladies there and they told me that there is a zero percent chance of getting those premium tags unless you have access to a machine.

Now I personally don't have an issue with how they are handling the returned tags. I believe all tags that are turned back in should be resold or listed for sale. The DOW is suppose to manage wildlife. So how can they do their job if they don't allow those tags to be punched like in the past where they were simply tore up and NO ONE had a chance at harvesting an animal in that unit... For the guys who live out of state and say that its not fair that they don't get a chance at those tags I say... BOOO WHOOO to you because we as residents have had to deal with out of state hunters causing point creep for years. This is a small victory for the residents who have paid their dues.... GOOD LUCK to everyone who is going to play the lottery tuesday.. I know I will be giving it my best as I am fortunate enough to have access to a tag machine and will be trying my best at some tags that only have a couple available....
