Have a public land archery hunt planned the first week of the season in a former OTC unit in Colorado. Unfortunately my hunting buddy fell off a horse and broke his back yesterday. He’ll be ok but not in time. Have a few great hunting partners but none can take off work on short notice. I’ve been on many DIY public land elk and caribou hunts finding success more often than not. Ill be going solo now but would prefer a tag along or another hunter.

It will be a backpack in with lots up and plenty of deadfall. Did I mention steep and deadfall? 😂

I hear that, I had 3 guys ... Ohhhh yeah I'ma go with you" well in a couple days I'll be going solo as well 😂😂😂. Go and have fun

Been in similar situations. Its scary and exhilarating to be alone in the wilderness. Scrambling over deadfalls and widow maker trees scare me more than any critters.

You may already have planned this, but take some safety precautions. Get a sat phone or minimum gps with text ability. Give loved ones a map showing your location and check in and get weather updates. Take enough on your day hunts to spend the night if need be. Good first aid kit and knowledge of how to use it.

Have fun.

First aid kits an knowing how to use them is super important. And because I'm going archery I got some bleed stop tourniquets and stop bleed plus normal first aid stuff. Also think an emergency blanket isn't a bad idea either, I got the bigger one that will make a small shelter if need be. I hate deadfall areas and drainages but for whatever reason always find myself in them 🤦🤦. I don't think it's a bad idea to have a basic first aid class under the belt either, mine lapsed by a year but the knowledge is there. I worry more about 2 legged critters than anything with 4 legs in the woods.

Same boat here… looking to connect with other hunters. Not to pumped on solo.

September is a bit early on notice for me. However I have a cow elk hunt 1st rifle in the Walden area and an OTC 3rd rifle bull planned. I’m not locked in on a location yet for the bull, but I could be open to travel. I’m located in Loveland. Happy to tag up with anyone.

Feel free to PM me!

I went solo for the first time last year...and ended up getting my biggest bull yet and learned a ton. Will do it again any time I don't have someone joining.

Had my zoleo for SOS and messaging home...just loved sending that text to family: "Just shot a bull"

Good Luck!

I'm told that most solo elk hunters had a partner back out for some reason.

I went with a partner last year. I hunted the last day by myself. This year, I'm doing the whole trip by myself. There are certainly group things that I will miss. But I am also excited by the freedom of going solo. I can get up when I want, I can go where I want, I can do what I want, I can stay out as late as I want, ...

I do have a Zoleo. The ability to have some contact and to have rescue capabilities helps a lot.

I also have reasonable first aid. I have some quick clot. I have an Israeli bandage....
