CO draw question

With the recent otc changes in CO I'm going to put in the draw for the first time. I bought a preference point last year so I understand that. The unit I want to hunt is not worth using my preference point and I want to get another preference point this year. Is my only option to put in for that unit on the secondary draw?

Or just put in for the preference point for your first choice. Yes, you could put in for something that you can't draw, but always better to know what you are doing in case of any confusion. From the regs.

To apply for a point, enter E-P-999-99-P as your first-choice hunt code on your application. You can gain a preference point as a first

Preference point first so you get the point then unit you want as secondary. As stated above you can also put in for a high point unit which you have no chance of drawing and will have the same results.

Sorry to hijack but it seems like the original question is answered. Maybe this is a FNG question but are preference points method specific? I'm shooting for next year or the following for my first hunt out west. Still not sure if we want to do muzzleloader or archery. Can a preference point be used for either or do you build points separately in each category?

There are 2 ways to get preference point. 1) Put the preference point code as your first choice. 2) Apply for a limited draw as your first choice and NOT get drawn. I verified this with CPW yesterday. And I was told that putting the preference point code as first choice and limited draw code as second choice decreases your odds of drawing.

Preference points are species specific but not weapon specific.

I think that's an understatement. The 1st choice applicants draw before the 2nd choice applicants. A lot of hunt codes don't go past the 1st choice, or barely go past the 1st choice.

I'd definitely recommend looking at the Hunting Statistics. Look at Hunt Big Game on the CPW web site and then down on the left hand side, Hunting Statistics. Looking at the statistics and doing some planning, I should be able to draw my 2nd choice, preference point for 1st choice, and then get another tag in the secondary draw, which should be cool.

Not sure why anyone would apply for a high PP unit to get a PP.

About 30 years ago they didnt have the PP code, then we had to

So putting the hunt you want in the 2nd choice certainly decreases your odds of drawing that tag. They basically take everyone's first choice and dole out the tags. If there are tags left then they look at everyone who put in for that hunt code as a 2nd choice. Say there are 100 tags. 80 people put in for this hunt code as their first choice so they all get the tag. Then there are 20 tags left (after all 1st choice tags are allocated) and 40 people have that hunt code as 2nd choice they do a random draw of those 40 people for the 20 tags. 50% chance of drawing it by pitting it down as your second choice.

What I was having a hard time understanding from your post (and maybe I misunderstood) is that putting the PP code as 1st choice then your desired hunt code second would decrease your chances of drawing as opposed to putting a high point unit in the first choice then your desired unit in the second choice. These two scenarios would net the same chance of drawing your second choice, correct?
