I smelled him day before archery elk season opened and investigated opening day to find him. Smelled terrible but luckily I had some contractor bags to haul his head out. In my downtime at camp I peeled away at his skull which was full of maggots and such. Luckily I have a strong stomach. Got him officially measured in November to find out I was 7/8" short of B&C dead head. Still was an awesome find and I have something to remember the trip with.

How do you suspect it died? Was there an archery hunt before you found him? Or did it look like a predator?

Found this dead head 20 years ago in a very popular Colorado unit. Brought him right to Fish and Game to hear straight from the warden there was no fee or penalty for pick ups. Sweet…

That's a cool find!

This is the best deadhead that I have found. I believe it was probably a lion kill.

Nice find. Always a mix of emotions to find big deadheads. I found the deadhead in the pic below about 3 hours prior to killing the buck that is mounted. Took pictures and left the deadhead where I found it, just under 5 miles from the trailhead. Sent pics the the game warden the next day and he told me no problem to pick it up so I went back and got it.

That's a great find.

I found a 300 class 6x6 elk deadhead several years ago. Told some locals about it and they knew the guy that shot and couldn't retrieve the bull in the same place I was hunting. So I gave it to them, presumably finding its way back to the original hunter.
