Hey guys just a quick question. I'm looking to purchase some new clothing this year. I'm a shorter guy at 5'4" 145 lbs. Are there any of the brands that you think would fit the vertically challenged better. It looks to me like first lite runs long. Thanks!

fits lite runs large In every way. I personally find some of the sitka pieces to run a bit shorter and I'm 6"2".

I'm in the same category: 5'6 140 lbs. hard to find hunting outerwear that fits like technical gear and not a snowboard/ski fit. I've tried medium chugach from Kuiu and it fits like a large on me. So baggy it was ridiculous. I've been using medium Sitka gear outerwear and it does alright. I.e. Dewpoint and stormfront. It would be really nice if Sitka and Kuiu offered Small! It appears that first light has the same problem. I'm about to ditch my Sitka as it wears out and replace it wit Outdoor Research, mountain hardwear and Fjallraven.

Huh, I thought Sitka was supposed to pretty durable. I have an Arcteryx rain jacket in a size small and it too small for me to wear a puffy underneath. Also have an Arcteryx atom jacket that I've worn a hole through in the front. The material is super thin. I could wear a medium jacket as long as the sleeves aren't super long.

Considering that most companies design and size their garments based on average dimensions, those who fall outside the average are often forced to compromise or get creative. If I couldn't get the fit I needed, here's what I would probably do:

Call the company (Sitka, FL etc) and explain the sizing issues. Let them make a suggestion. If that doesn't seem to work, ask them about getting your pants (or other pieces) altered to fit correctly and who they would recommend to do the work. Most of these good gear companies work with people who provide repairs or alteration services. You might even find someone in your area who has the skills to do a professional job for you. The downsides are extra cost and effort, but the upside would be hunting gear that fits better than anything you've bought off the rack.

Thank, I always get my pants shortened but have never thought about shortening shirt sleeves.

sitka runs true to size on their size chart....whereas first lite is slightly sized larger in top and smaller in bottoms

i am 6ft 175 and wear large sitka tops and medium first lite tops

if you need help with either let us know and we can help put a system together and save you some money in the process.

sitka i know has a company they work with that is great for alterations

anything sitka that breaks/tears as a result of over use is typicaly warrantied

Thanks bean. I may look into the alterations more seriously. I'll have to give y'all a call when I'm ready to start ordering.

I get a lot of my clothes altered for fit. I will say if you get shirt sleeves altered make sure they taper the new cut. I had an expierence with huge cuffs because the sleeve was not tapered.

I would really like to get some stuff tailored. I'm 5'8 and 170lbs. I need a large jacket for the chest and sleeves, but then it hangs on me every where else. My inseam is only 29 or 30 and most pants are too long. If they have cargo pockets or knee pads they are way too low. Hard for us shorter guys to find anything that fits well no matter what brand or price point.

I am 5'4" 135. First Lite Llano in small fits great. Kanabs in small are huge. Kuiu ultra merino 145 in small is baggy and long. Chugach jacket in medium is baggy and long. Prahna Zions in 30" small are a little big but ok.

Have you tried youth size large in sitka? Think the youth L goes up to 64" and 28 waist in pants and 28 inseam. My BIL is about your same size and youth large fits him well (less options) but is a bit cheaper too.

Some times a youth extra large top fits me but I can't do the 28" in the waist. I'm a 31".

Just an update, I picked up a couple Sitka shirts in the classifieds last week. I got a merino 1/4 zip and a traverse 1/4 zip. I really like the fit of the traverse but something on the merino shirt is not quiet fitting right. I think I'm going to put the merino back up in the classifieds and order a Llano. First lite still has some of the realtree stuff on sale so I'm thinking of trying a size small in the Llano.

Well, dang it first lite. The shipping for 1 llano is almost $11. I shall do some more searching.

Edit, I found the same deal on black ovis and remembered I had a 10% off from when I signed up and they had free shipping. So I got the small Llano in max 1 for $59. Should be nice for the upcoming turkey season. Hope it fits.

Sitka runs very short; I don't even bother trying them on. First Lite runs long although anything released in 2016 was cut at least 2" shorter and I'm assuming that will continue in the 2017 line (ie Cirrus, Vapor, etc.). Also, the Chama runs a little short. The Uncompaghre, Halstead and Sanctuary all run very long but are perfect for me.

I think he was just referring to the future when he wears it enough to warrant replacement, not that it was wearing out quick. My Sitka gear has worn very well, if I would just quit bumping into propane heaters and burning holes in it I would be good.
