Climbing stand mishap. How much am I looking at to fix?

So after a pretty eventful opening morning in the stand I was about to make my way down the tree. I tied up my bow and began to lower it down over the railing of the top section of my climber when the stand gave way. While nothing serious happened, as the lower section only dropped a few inches, it was enough to catch me off gaurd and I let go of the lowering line to secure myself. The bow dropped +/- 10' straight down landing directly on a rock; curling the lip of the lower cam. I'm going to take it into the pro shop on monday but to at least take some of the stress and frustration of being at a stand still only a few hours into the season; how much am I looking at to fix this and be back in the woods? Thanks for any help!

Tough to say. If the cam is not cracked, or bent. They may be able to file it clean, and polish it up with some fine paper. At least to get you through the season. It looks like there is enough cable track there to keep the cam usable.

If not, then probably $100 for the cam plus technician time. You may have to re-tune when done. Mathews may be more or less, but the last PSE cam I bought was $90 for a bottom CC cam.

Yeah, no cracks, and it looks ilke there's enough of a track but I didn't know if it was salvageable and I couldn't find any prices on the cams. But even this bit of information is comforting. Thanks a bunch!

Check the limbs over as well. From the picture it looks like the cam took the brunt of the fall, but could be other another casualty.

Also damage could have taken place in the bearing. Might take a while to show. I'd definitely plan on replacing the cam, even if it's after season.

Probably can get by for a little while if you clean the burrs off the cam. I know my shop would give me a cam off of another bow until a replacement came in if I wanted, something to consider. I doubt you will need to retune if you swap out the cam, but you might.

Personally I would replace the cam. Better safe than sorry. New cam means I know o don’t have an issue with it. “Repaired” cam I’ll always have a worry something might go wrong.

An AVS cam from Mathews is going to be roughly $120. At least that's what we charge for a new one. Not sure if they'll charge you to install it.

Gotta watch those straps holding stand. Luckily it was just bow. A couple of years ago a buddy’s stand fell from tree and he broke his back and laid there for a while before someone showed up looking for him. Squirrels had chewed straps and they where barely holding until he climbed up in it.
Shouldn’t take to much to fix. Worse case they replace came and re-tune bow.

Kinda surprised they didn't pull one off another bow for you. 2 weeks is a good while to be without your bow during season.

Man, this is why climbing stands scare me. I’ve tried them several times and never feel secure.

Two people in Missouri have had falls already this year because the cable broke or it lost grip.

The owner of the shop seems like a great guy but most of the younger guys behind the counter shouldn’t be in customer service IMO. But I’m really limited to them unless I want to travel an hour and a half away. I called in a couple hours ago to see if they had talked to Mathews in the past couple days and they said they had just sent them an email... not sure if they really did or it was just a good thing I reminded them. But they told me a definite minimum of 10 days but not to be upset if it takes 2-3 weeks. Really frustrating since I’m off work this week for bow season. But these things happen I suppose. Oh and it’s just going to be a lower cam swap. Everything else looks good.

Thanks for the helpful advice and I also tend not to use climbers because of this but after messing up a spot earlier that morning I had remembered my brother had a climber hung up at the back of the property so I decided to sneak back there and make use of it. But anymore I use hang-ons w/ a harness primarily if I use a stand but prefer to stalk 80-90% of the time though. If anything, this has just solidified my position on not using climbers haha

Well, while I was replying to BillyGoat, I thought “an hour and a half isn’t much of a hassle if it’s less than 2 weeks” and I called around and turns out the guy at the other shop thought the whole situation sounded odd and he ordered a cam while we were on the phone and said he’d have it by Friday morning at the latest; and he’ll be cheaper on top of that. Safe to say, I’ll be making the trip more often for this kind of customer service.

I would contact Matthews directly. That looks like a new Halon from the picture. There’s a decent chance they will cover it for you. Even though it was an accident.
