I think we need a full-on hardcore cliff throwing test!

Not just packs, let's just start dumping the packs over the side: Jetboils, binocs, tents, havalons, tripods, sleeping pads, etc.

See what all survives, no more messing around :D

Haha yeah if I get cliffed out I'm using a piece of para cord to lower it if I can help it. Not because im worried about my pack just to try and save my gear any un needed abuse.

My pack went off a cliff on a goat hunt last year. I had cameras in both belt pouches....I had a few futher muckers fly out while it was rolling and flipping down the mountain!

I think this has been blown way out of proportion.

The cliff throw portion of my backpack comparison review (not a scientific test) was something I thought of as a fun way to get an impression of durability under rare and extreme circumstances.

I based it off experiences I have had when I lost my pack down a mountain a few times, sometimes intentionally and sometimes unintentionally. At least for me, I have had to do things quickly for my own safety (and due to my own mistakes), and did not have the luxury of stopping and p-cording my pack down a ledge.

As far as how useful this part was, I thought a potential buyer might find the packs' durability under these rare extreme circumstances to inspire confidence in the packs under normal circumstances.

I thought it was fun and interesting and never meant to cause anybody any grief or cast dispersions on any product or manufacturer, especially a product or manufacturer I didn't even use in the comparison.

I do not work for (or have ever worked for) Kifaru, Stone Glacier, Kuiu, or any other outdoor manufacturer, and I don't care to.

I just like to hunt and try out gear.

Matt , I thought the cliff toss test was brilliant. That was a real world test and it does inspire confidence in the packs. Kuiu's desire not to have their pack tested in that way was just a manifestation of their deeper problems.

Throwing your gun down to test the scope is real world but I don't see you volunteering any of yours.

Thats what I love about real world testing done by other people. It's not my chit that gets fubared. I hope I never need to chuck my pack off a cliff but it I do I now have some confidence that there is a good chance it will still work. No telling about the stuff in it though !

You'd have to get to the top of the cliff first mang so you should be good to go. But I hear they got some high overpasses in FL. :D

Working on that ! We have some sand dunes and a stairway to Jesus as Aron calls it :) . I'll be back trying to crawl up mountains again this fall and thats more than anyone else I know around here is willing to do. Hopefully I can move to some mountains when my son graduates.

Haven't tried the cliff thing yet...but I did run over a SLIP System with my truck about 20 times (if you count retakes) here:

How many vertical feet we talking to qualify as a cliff? I'm up to the challenge! ;)

My Barney's pack has been off the cliff several times full and even on e with me attached to it. ;). I e learned to keep my fragil things inside protected by clothes or sleeping bag or pad...

I think we should throw each other off a cliff to see who's tuffest. I have an extra layer of padding around the middle for protection, though it also means I'll probably hit harder.

Then we can also have an annual rokslide midget tossing just for sport. :)

Haha I bet!! And that's the great part about owning a K pack. Nice to know it can hold up to that abuse if SHTF and my gear will likely make it out alive too. I'm not against the test at all and think it gives a good idea of durability.
