what is the best product/method for removing small patches of surface rust from a barrel? I tried a cloth and remy oil and didnt work well.

Its not deep, minimal rust but not sure of the best way to get it off and not damage the barrel.

Thanks in advance

0000 steel wool and any kind of oil. WD40 works great.

Work and polish the spot and it will be mostly unnoticeable until the barrel dries out.

The same method works great on buffing your scratches up wood stock.

0000 and mineral oil works well. I have to do it like once a month fml.

If you constantly run into this problem like I do in the PNW, lots of people use a silicone impregnated cloth to wipe down and it helps them.

I’ve had good luck with Frontier Metal Cleaner. It’s made specially for removing rust on firearms. Works better than 0000 steel wool.

Steel wool will remove the bluing, I’ve used brass wool with hoppes and it doesn’t take off the blue. I used that with some rifles from the 30s that had light surface rust. They cleaned up well. Just work slow and carefully.

I used EVAPO-RUST to remove some minor rust from a car I was working on in 2020.

It works best when the rusted piece can be submerged in the liquid. It does take anywhere from a day to a few days for it to do its thing, but it does work well IMO. If you are in a hurry, then this is not the rust remover for you. :)

It's non-toxic and won't harm paint (so bluing should be okay) and can be reused many, many times.

Good luck,

Eddie

depends somewhat on what type of bluing. old school rust bluing on an older classic gun IS actually rust, and it is applied in part with steel or bronze wool. It will thin the bluing a tiny bit, but it wont harm the gun (and if its that thin/rusty its not doing much anyway). 0000 bronze wool with some oil wont hurt the finish though. Some guns just seem to develop alittle rust if you look at them funny, no matter how clean and oiled you keep them. I finally replaced the worst offender with stainless.

I bought my first blued hand gun when I moved to NW IN. It was a hot summer in 99. Crazy humidity that I wasn't used to. Clothes would still be wet on the line after work.

I stored it in a silica rag in the case and it was coved in rust in a short time. I just kept oilinjg it down with rem oil, nothing else. And now you would have to look for the spots. Not saying showroom, but the oil just ate away the rust. I stored it in the open after that.
