Working on getting some ideas to do a semi build based on a savage.
Looking at doing a 6mm Creed.
In looking at Northland Shooters supply they have Criterion Barrels and Shilen as well in Prefits.

What I am a little off on what way to go is the barrel type. As in Stainless or Chrome Moly.
The Criterion comes in Stainless or Chrome Moly in the white.
The Shilen comes in Stainless or Chrome Moly Blued.

Now I will say I am not a huge fan of a bright barrel. Some might like it. I personally dont.
So either way I plan to have it Cerakoted.

But a few things I don't 100% know.
Will the stainless effect the Cerakote?
Is there a benefit from Stainless to the Chrome Moly in just the barrel even if both were Cerakoted.

The Chrome Moly is a slight bit cheaper. But if it is just simply the fact that the stainless wont rust, that I am not concerned about as I take care of my stuff and its going to be Cerakoated anyway.

Another small note that I just saw.
The Shilen barrel in 6 Creed also has 2 different ones. One is a .109 FB and the other is listed as a VLD SAMI .183 FB

The bore is exposed and can rust in CM. Stainless steel rusts, but not as easily. Absent the concern for rust, the difference isn’t really material, IMO. Certainly nothing to stress about.

I would go with the stainless 183 freebore. This is what i have ran in a lot of PRS and hunting rifles and that seems to be the right chamber dimensions for shooting anything around the 108 ELDM. Stainless barrels just give you a little extra protection compared to the CM barrels.

So I am assuming with the .183 Freebore this would allow for room for the longer heavier bullets. Event something even heavier than the 108 ELDm

I agree that the longer freebore option is better if you want to use heavier bullets. In my experience, even when using lighter bullets the extra jump doesn't adversely affect groups as long as there isn't something else going on.

In regards to your question about which material to go with, I know some people will say that even a cerakoted chrome moly barrel still has the bore unprotected, but since you are in MO and will most likely store the gun in a climate controlled environment, I wouldn't worry about it.
That being said, cerakote works on both. There is no significant difference in how it adheres or wears between CM and SS. As long as it is applied and cured correctly, you won't see a difference. So, if your action is cerakoted and you are looking to have your barrel match, then I would recommend going with CM and having it cerakoted. If your action is SS and you just want something that looks different, then go with SS and have the whole thing cerakoted. If your action is SS and you are trying to match the barrel finish, then I would recommend going with SS and having the barrel bead blasted, rather than coated. It will knock the shine off and be a close match to the factory Savage SS finish. It will cost a lot less too. I just looked and it is an option to get it that way from NSS.

This is my default option for barrels. Haven't had one cerakoted in a long time. Unnecessary expense. I guess If I expected to have one forevever and not shoot it much cerakote might be justified but who buys a barrel and doesn't plan to shoot it much?

My 22 creed is a Shilen with a barrel nut and I have nothing but good things to say about it. All Shilen prefit barrels can be ordered directly from Shilen with many more choices of taper, length, threading, chambers, etc. I don’t trust the waiting times so ordered it from Midway for about the same price and it showed up two days later.

I will never buy another chrome moly barrel again, unless it's simply a range toy.

I too hate how shiny stainless barrels are, I have done the fancy paint thing (cerakoat), but recently had semi mat black PVD coating applied to my most recent built. Pretty happy with it so far, but need a couple hunting seasons on it to really know if it passes muster.
