Classified Ads $5 lowball offers

I just need to rant dang it! This past year ive sold about $1000 worth of gear on the classifieds. I just posted a handful of gear items on the ads, and was unpleasantly reminded of a trend i noticed all year. What is up with asking for $5-10 off the price of an already screaming great deal?? I understand a certain amount of marketplace haggering over prices, especially if it's an item someone is struggling to sell. I've sent more than one "offer" PM knocking $25-50 off of expensive items, along with a message indicating that i understand it's a "lowball" offer, but if they cant sell the item at their asking price, my offer stands.

I just don't understand skimping 5$...if the asking price is already a great deal, especially on items less than $100 bucks, just pay it. I have noticed it's usually junior/newer members, not that it really matters. Anyways, rant over..

what's worse IMO is i'm constantly being asked "What's your best price?". it's just plain lazy. if you want to negotiate price then make an offer.

I hear you man...Maybe other people do things differently, but when i post something to sell, I've already made the price deduction calculation and figured my shipping cost. What im asking is what the price is. If it doesn't sell, i can go from there in terms of price reduction.

Oh my favorite topic to be brought up on forums. Its always interesting to me. When you knock $5 off an item, its ridiculous and people should just pay it. When I have to pay $5 more for an item, tough shit, I should just pay it. When you lose $5 its a deal breaker, when I have to pay $5 more, it is what it is.

Nobody has a gun to your head, your not forced to sell an item. Now, you want a real rant. My favorite is when people tell you they will pay cash for something. Well no shit its going to be cash, I dont finance items.

I find it hard to sell something for a firm asking price. Guys want to wiggle the deal a little and feel like they got a good deal instead of being pinned down from the get go.

Start 15 dollars higher.

I guess you're right man... I just don't think that way. If somethings already a good deal and i want it, and have the money for it, i buy it haha.

Yeah, it's annoying. Probably some sort of psychological defense mechanism, but I try to tell myself that I and my wife both have good jobs and are blessed to be in the position we're in, and $5 probably means more to this schlub than me, so don't get worked up over it. When selling multiple items I also mind less if I'm able to ship multiple items at one time, feel like it's a little win. I learned to only respond to offers worth responding to. If someones makes a cheesedick offer I hope my silence gets the point across.

I had some guy one time low balling on an InReach Explorer. I ended up selling it for more than my Rokslide asking price on a Facebook backpacking forum. So, this isn't the only place to sell stuff.

When I've reached a point of wanting to sell something I describe it well, take decent photos and price it to be gone in 24 hours simply because I don't like keeping up with the ad, bringing it to the top and sorting thru time stamped private messages. In other words, I use low ball pricing to start. If it doesn't sell, I drop the ad and try again later.

I also ignore haggling offers or contingent offers. "I'll take it IF........." will always lose out to "I'll take it. What's your paypal?"

I usually just give in to the $5 less offers. It's just easier to be done with it.
What I don't get is the offers for 50% less. Also what is up with the want ad posts? " I want a high end item, barely used and I need it for 75% off retail"
Thanks for starting the thread and allowing me to join in on the rant.

I think you just answered your own question my friend: Why do people do it? Because it works!

I hear you man. I guess i just wish people had more respect. I understand being on a budget. I bought the gear on a budget myself. I save every penny i can in order to hunt... I just don't get the mentality is all.

Yes, some offers are ridiculous. But I find it amazing how often people pay full retail for stuff and then knock off 5-10% and think they are giving someone a good deal. When I can find the same items at 40% off retail brand new, even 40% off on used is not a good deal. So seller and buyer's perception is important in these transactions.

I've seen some pretty good deals on here, many of them leaving money on the table. But I have also offered an amount I'd be willing to pay for an item which was well below asking. But it's usually as a last ditch effort for the seller to get rid of an item that they can't sell for more. Just a standing offer if they can't sell it, but they really want to get rid of it.

My wife says I'm hard to buy presents for because if I wanted it, I'd already have it. That's probably true. So in many cases, I don't need the items in question. But if someone really wants to get rid of it, and they haven't had any luck doing so.......I'll play the pawn shop guy and offer what I am willing to pay.

It's quite the opposite watching some of these home buying shows, where they are offering MORE than asking. I'm sorry but my nature doesn't allow me to give someone MORE than they were asking for a house......even if it means losing that house.

Sellers do definitely have to take availability into consideration... For example, thats why kifaru stuff holds value on here so well. Between the wait time and the shipping cost of buying direct from kifaru, new/like new condition kifaru gear is a good deal even at close to retail value. But something you can get on camofire for 20% off new is a different story for sure.

Just sold a brand new set of wheels off my new truck. Retail price is 2500.00, was asking 600. A friend called me and said his buddy was interested on the first day. I said, since hes your friend, tell him 550 and heres my number. Guy had been looking 3 months he said. Guy calls me and offers 500 immediately! I got pissed and told him hell no ,ill let them sit in my damn garage in the boxes first!! Ended up taking me a month to sell, but i got 575.00 from them. Helluva deal to start with and guys do that crap. It is irritating.

I understand your frustrations to some degree. But, it is also just as frustrating to see used gear that's asking price is for 95% of new retail. What you think is a screaming deal usually isn't if its your stuff

What's your criteria for a "junior/newer member"?
I usually check out people's profiles before i do business with them, as it seems like there's more and more scammers on here. It says right on the profile page if they are a junior member, member or senior member. Which is directly tied to how many posts they have created/commented on. I just figure if someone has been buying/selling on here for a while, they probably "get it" more, In terms of understanding both sides of the buyer/seller interaction.
