It's a good time to buy bar oil for your chainsaws. I just bought a few gallon jugs of Stihl winter blend at a local Ace Hardware for $13.99 a gallon. Normally $22 to $25 a gallon for winter blend. Some Menard's locations have Poulan Pro bar oil on clearance for $7.99 a gallon and I bought another 4 gallons of Echo bar oil at Home Depot for $11.42 a gallon.
All are good deals when compared to what they are selling bar oil for these days.

I just use my old car oil.
For the last 20 years I have owned a full time tree service business, I can’t count the number of saws I own and maintain, all I run is used motor oil as well, anybody that claims it doesn’t work is wrong… the only time I use real bar oil is in the winter when logging and cutting veneer quality wood to avoid stains on timber sales, otherwise it’s the free stuff for me.

Good to know! Got plenty of used oil that just saved me a few buck!

I absolutely will not run used motor oil through the oiler of a 1700 dollar saw that I earn my living from. Bad for worm gear, pump, wears on your bar and drivers. Out in logging camp, you can’t just run to the Stihl shop. Falling and bucking old growth timber , I can’t jeopardize having a saw down over trying to save a few bucks.

I can see that side too. I guess if you were worried about wearing it out a guy could get away with just using cheap new motor oil? 6-7$ compared to 20.
