Can’t get low enough elevation

I was able to take my new Savage High County 300wm out yesterday. It’s mounted with a Farrell 20 MOA base with Low Warren Mtn Tech rings and a Leupold VX-6HD 4-24x52. 2 inches center of bore to center of scope. After a box of Nosler 200gr Partitions, the lowest level on the scope was only getting me to shooting 5 ft high at 100 yrds. I disassembled everything at the range and reassembled to make sure I hadn’t goofed up somewhere, and got the same result. So I disassembled everything again and put a flat rail on and was on center after raising, from bottomed out setting on scope, 43 MOA. I had the high cheek rest mounted on the stock so the level rail made it hard to get proper eye relief But still managed to get this group of 5 with a vey hot barrel, confused and aggravated shooter. Anyone know of an issue with Leupold bottoming out with a 20MOA rail? yes, the high end of rail was mounted toward the butt end of the rifle. I’m going to give Leupold a call today, but thought I’d ask here 1st while they still closed. FYI, after the initial mounting of the scope on the 20MOA rail, I removed the elevation cover and turned the elevation down approx 37 MOA where it bottomed out.

My brothers Vortex Viper had this happen. One of the internal components of the scope had broken. He sent it in and got a new scope.

Defiantly call Leupold. I would bet it has to do with internals of the scope and something not being right with them.

They claimed it was impossible to be 5ft over and to try putting the 20MOA rail back on and replace scope, that is centered with flat rail. It should only be shooting 20MOA high. We'll see....

Sounds like you have more than a 20 MOA rail.. Try this: Zero rifle with flat rail then swap rails and shoot rifle.. You should be close to 21" high at 100 yards... if its significantly more you're base is more than 20 MOA..

Yeah, sounds more like a 100 MOA rail! Either the scope doesn’t adjust properly or your rail is way out of sorts!

I had a Leupold that basically got stuck at the extreme end of it's adjustment once and would not adjust up. I was using Warne fixed rings that were vertically split on a savage 116 rifle. The scope was only stuck 1/2" low, so I lived with it a few years until I learned that vertically split rings were known to bind scope internals. I replaced the rings with a generic set of weavers, then fully cycled the elevation turret, top to bottom several times before tightening the new rings. I counted the clicks and dialed it back into the middle before tightening the rings. After that, I was able to successfully zero the rifle. I'm still not sure if it was a ring problem, a scope problem, or a ring + scope problem, but the problem is gone and the scope seems fine now.

If you have not exercised your turrets it's free, quick and probably worth trying.

After taking a week off and hitting the range again Sunday, same issue. Leupold claimed it HAD to be the rail. I took everything off again to ensure no "barbs" or anything on the bottom of the rail. Contacted Farrell and immediately saw in my order that it was a rail for an older Savage (pre 2003) and has sent me the correct rail. I was given the wrong rail advise to start with. Should have the new rail in 2 days and we'll see what happens Sunday.
