Can you realistically fight off a 100+lb dog or are you going to lose?

Talking to K9 handlers at work about what to do if a dog gets ahold of you, almost all of them say shove whatever they have in their mouth as deep as you can bc it will cause a gag reflex. After that go for the choke by lifting them off their feet, using their weight against them. Still going to be a bad day.

Thats why you carry a sidearm every time you are in the outdoors. You never know what you will run into.
I learned this recently. I’ve never had a bad or even weird experience in the outdoors before, but recently had dog encounter while camping.

A few weeks ago I took my 8 year old son camping. My nephews and BIL were supposed to go with us but several of them got sick so it was just my son and I. Shortly after we set up our tent, a not so friendly looking dog came into our campsite and was aggressively growling and barking at us. The dog appeared to have bad intentions and i instantly regretted I didn’t bring a pistol, which I had debated bringing the day before.

I put my son behind me and pulled my knife off my belt. After a few minutes of keeping the dog in front of me as it started getting closer, I held the knife in a much more defensive posture. Up until this point I don’t think my son was worried about the dog. The strange thing was that as this happened my son started getting upset, but not because he felt threatened but because he said he didn’t want me to kill a dog. While I’ve heard of aggressive, wild dogs in the outdoors, I’ve never encountered any, but know they can trouble. My son in the other hand has always viewed dogs as friendly, neighborhood companions.

After about 3-4 minutes of the dog barking and growling at us, it eventually backed away and then scampered off.

I wasn’t looking to get in a fight with that dog, but was ready to defend my son however needed. Glad it ended the way it did, but told myself that all future outings I’d have a sidearm.

Here’s a picture my son took of the dog.

Always carry.
The one time I've fired my sidearm in self defense was a warning shot
at a Pitbull trying to have a go at my wife and me on a walk.
Next thing would have been a mag dump in this dog. Luckily he changed
his mind.
Other than a sidearm, a razor sharp blade I say.
No weapon? grab em by both back legs and sling that suckers
head into a tree.

We have six or seven Great Pyrenees guard dogs for our sheep and cattle. We love them because they have such a great temperament with kids and guests. I have seen what they do to other dogs, coyotes, and table scrap bones. I wouldn’t ever want to tango with them. Small females are 60-70 pounds. Males are 100-150 pounds they can crush bones like you wouldn’t believe. A friend tried to help me corral a male that was roaming into my truck. The dog didn’t know or trust him. So he just nipped at his arm and cut him causing him to need 15 stitches. A pitbull/rottweiler/mastiff would be even more of a challenge. Also I have had to shoot some that went rogue in the sheep. They can take more lead than the average deer and keep trucking.

We have a lot of reserves in Canada with a lot of feral dogs. Every year several people are killed by a pack. Mostly children but some adults. Some reserves have “dog days” every dog not tied up is shot. Usually a half ton load.

I once had an occasion to extract a 2 lb feral kitten from a woodpile. I was wearing welding gloves, but he bit through them. My thumb felt like it was in a pair of pliers with a nail poking in to it. After I got him into the box I was trying to put him in, I used my other hand to pinch his tail, and he finally let go of my thumb. He did not appreciate being rescued.

I don’t want to fight any animal that weighs more than two pounds. 😎😅😅
