Camping with kids

I don't think you need to bring toys. Maybe one or two treasured ones, stuffies for sleeping or something, but that's it. Kids will make their own fun outside.

Until your kids learn to swim well, I would avoid camping near any water.

Lol what? Just buy a lift jacket and call it good. Water is the best part of camping, fishing, swimming, floaties. Just plan accordingly.

Two things my kids love, currently 4 and 2, camped their entire life, are hammocks and walkie talkies. Make sure the walkie talkies are a kid version.

Get them a good kid camping chair.

Also, we like to "boondock" camp most of the time. We live in BC, so do have some good options, but fair bit of the camping I see in the states, it isn't camping for me. Kids love to just run in the woods, play in the trees.

When my son was 2 he ran off the end of a dock. Was found face down in the lake. My mil (a nurse) resuscitated him. He spent 10 hours in the ER and everything was fine. There are tears streaming down my face typing this, and it happened 23 years ago.
It can happen in the blink of an eye.

Sorry to hear that, accidents do happen but glad to hear your son made it. You could get in a car crash driving to camping as well but this doesn't prevent you from driving there. People also wear a seat belt to help prevent death in a car accident.

Water is deadly, I agree with you there but don't agree you need to be scared of it. Life jackets save lives. We beat this into our kids and they understand it. No life jacket, no water. Its just like bike riding and a helmet, no helmet no bike.
