Cam timing vs nock/Arrow set up

I always time/sync cams,then tie in arrow and set nock point. However once tuning is it better to
A) have cams hit dead even and adjust vert nock travel with nock pt (eg run high or low in berger hole and have nock level or nock high to achieve bareshaft,paper or broadhead flight).....OR
B) have arrow nock level/90 degrees and advance/slow cams by twists in strings to tune arrow?

IMO it doesn’t matter. Tuned is tuned regardless of how you get there.

That said, I start with cams synced and arrow level through the Berger hole. If vertical correction is needed during tuning, I adjust rest elevation first because that’s quicker/easier than moving the nocking point or adjusting cam timing.

Ideally you are timed and nock is set in correct spot the first time. The only time I retie the nock is if during the tuning process the rest is too high or low (out of travel or hitting shelf).

I'm a simpleton but I like to have everything perfectly in time and in spec. Then I tie my d loop in 1/16"-1/8" above centershot. The only reason I do that is so I've got more rest clearance if I need to adjust it. I'd rather move my loop slightly up than my rest slightly down into the riser and lose clearance. Just my approach.

I usually start by adjusting my centershot at 13/16, bottom of arrow through the center of the berger hole, cams synced. Shoot bareshaft through paper and let the bow tell me what it needs for a bullet hole. For example, I just tuned my RX8, couldn't get rid of a slight high right tear even after adjusting my arrow rest, ended up shimming the bottom cam to the right, now slight left tear, adjusted my arrow rest a little and bam - bullet hole. Now my bow tuned with the nock about 1/8" above level and perfect bullet hole. make initial adjustments and the bow/arrow combo will tell you what it needs.

With a hunting bow, I normally try to get cam timing dead on, depending on the bow, that might or not get cams perfectly in sync. On a bow that cams will sync, I set loop dead center between the axles, soft nocks inside and raise the nock point just slightly with more soft nock under than over. Then make any vertical adjustments with the rest.


In tuning for vertical I rarely will play with cables, I'll play with cables on a target bow to improve the hold, but not to tune. If it's a bow that nocks above center I'll frequently move nock point up or down as a course adjustment, then anything slight would be micro adjustments with the rest.
