So I am looking at a new area that is fairly water deprived. My thought is to go in before season with a collapsible 5 gallon water container, fill it, then hang it in a tree. I was thinking that if I pumped it through my filter, then dropped in some purification tablets that it would still be usable by the time I get in there.

Has anyone done such a thing? If so how was the quality of the water? How much did you lose to evaporation?

This would save us from having to drop down almost a 1K feet to get water each day. Wont last a whole week I don't think but would save a lot of energy and leg work.

We've cached water during early scouting trips. Wasn't sure the springs would still be running, so filled up a couple empty 2liter mixer bottles. (Platypus bottles & bladders are also handy for this.) We put several drops of bleach in each from an eye dropper bottle I carry. Springs were still running so we dumped them out and refilled w/ fresh. We would also re-fill our bladders before returning to camp after hunting to maintain a water stock at camp.
But yeah, you can cache water.

Side question....... what does the alcohol % have to be to sterilize water? Just curious.

I want to just throw out the obvious without starting an unhealthy debate. Just want to make sure everybody is thinking of everything.

"pack it in and pack it out", "tread lightly",......These are the basic guidelines that we should all be using. Caching supplies is not too far from littering in my opinion. I would be pissed when I go trekking in the wilderness and find jugs of water and food stashes hanging in trees. I could see how this could get out of control and diminish the quality of the wilderness for other users. I don't believe this is anyone's intent, but it would be the reality.

I realize you guys are primarily talking real short term, but ideas can quickly get out of control.
