It looks like all the sponsors here, and alot of other companys are doing well enough to get the big guys attention. I just got a new catalog from Cabelas introducing their new high end backcountry hunting line.

Cabela's has been eyeing the market share of Sitka and others for a little while. They had their Cynergy line about 4 years ago, modeled after Sitka's forest Celsius jacket and bibs and others (Gortex outer, puffy and base layer). I picked up the jacket and bibs on clearance. Worth getting at that price, but not quite the quality of what you would see with several of the sponsors. I'd guess they've gotten better, it'll be interesting to see what the quality actually is.

The 3 layer Gore-tex jacket does interest me a little....it retails for $299. I'm sure it will go on a deep sale after Christmas and cost less than $200. That's not bad for a 3 layer Gore-tex shell....camo or not.

this catalog has a new Instinct tent,a new Instinct sleeping pad, both with Big Agnes range prices. the new clothes are under kuiu, and sitka ,but are the same or more than First lite. ALL untested,or vouched for,for the same dough as products that have been.
not saying they are junk at all. Just think the price point is a bit off.

I have had very mixed results with Cabelas gear. Some holds up really well, some is of very poor construction. This caliber of gear is not a place I will risk being a guinea pig. I will buy the tried and true every time. Cabelas is very good about returns though....

First thing I thought when I got my "Instinct" catalogs was "damn, first lite, kuiu, etc are getting big"
Good news for those companies but part of me hopes we never see them in the catalog on the pages right behind Sitka...

Yeah I got one too. Looks better than what they had before.
There is a perfect fit for every person.

I'll stick to what I have.

I looked through that catalog and didn't see a single item that interests me. It's sad when I can look through an entire catalog and not see a single item that I want. Not sure if that says more about them or me.

It's a huge branding effort on Cabela's part, trying to create this new subbrand "Instinct" to attack the high end market. I don't think efforts like this are taken lightly, given the investment in time and resources against a calculated ROI, and the risk of taking market share from other high end suppliers. I'm curious if the success of the Instinct brand will depend upon everything or if they'll be able to drop underperforming commodities, keeping the rest. It's certainly less risky for Cabelas than it would be for a start-up, but they also have to overcome the stigma of being a "house brand".

In my mind, Cabelas is a major, quality brand to some people, especially some people that aren't online savvy, that don't visit forums, read reviews, and really see what is out there for top end quality. You get the "average CEO" that might hunt once or twice a year, that doesn't plan his own hunts, do any product research, no scouting, but still wants the "best" product. What else is cooler than having a hard cover master Cabelas catalog lying on the corner of your desk for all to see, and having the latest, greatest, and most expensive gear that Cabelas offers? Many of you probably remember (I know I do) when I used to buy all of my gear from Wal-Mart, then moved up to Cabelas, because I thought it was the best thing. Then, I introduced myself to Western hunting websites, where the gear junkies are like crackheads in a small SW Missouri town; all over the place, and I learned a thing or 10. I had never paid attention to Kuiu, First Lite, Big Agnes, Kifaru, and honestly, probably never heard of most of the manufacturers that I buy from today. Now, I understand quality, benefits, and (forgive me) smaller "name brand" companies offer typically a better product, that is designed by hunters, for hunters. Some of that is lost in a lot of big box store quality. Cabelas, as mentioned above, typically just puts their brand on another product, so It's hard to tell how the quality really is, not knowing the manufacturer. But, I think they'll be fine, because nothing makes your manhood feel bigger than walking up to a Cableas check out line with $3500 worth of brand new gear that you'll wear once a year. People do it all the time. I used to work at a hunting lodge, where every year, some high end clients would come into town, sometimes twice a year, and we'd take them into the local sporting goods shop, and they'd buy a new custom rifle, a Citori, a new Kimber 1911, $1500 worth of the coolest Filson and Sitka gear, 1000 rounds of ammo, and a $9 hat, and not even bat an eye. All they see is $$$$ and name brand, so it must be worth it, right??? Stuff is marked up 10-15% higher than Cabelas, but they don't care. It's cool. They can brag to their buddies and co-workers, and hide it from their wives.

I'm the same way . If there are a couple of things they have I'm interested in I sure wouldn't buy it from Cabellas or Bass Pro. Almost always find it less expensive elsewhere.

I haven't bought a single thing from Cabela's in years, and don't plan on changing that anytime soon.

The GoLite outlet store is FAR more appealing to me than Cabela's ever will be again, that ship sailed long ago.

Yup, me too. Ask some of the smaller companies that come up with an idea and then ask them who's the first one to steal it and market it. In China.
