Cabela's guide tent for 3 person moose hunt

We are heading to the Yukon Delta region for a 25 day moose hunt in 2021. We hunted with Renfros in the same area in 2018 and witnessed first hand how valuable the Cabela's Alaskan Guide (4 person) tents were in the high winds and constant rain of that area. The 4 person tent was tight for 2 of us. We are going back with 3 guys and want to bring our own tent. We are thinking about the Cabela's Alaskan Guide (6 or 8) or the upgrade to the Cabelas Instinct Alaskan Guide (6 or 8) tents. We know we need at least the 6 person tent and wonder if even that is enough for 3 guys to be stuck in a tent on cots for a couple of days. Does anyone have experience with the Guide / Instinct Guide tents with three guys?

One other consideration is that if we bump up to an 8 person, does the additional height represent a liability in high winds?

Thanks

Jack

If you can swing it, go with two 6 person tents. Put two individuals, plus the cots and gear, in each. Or go with the 8 person tent for the 4 of you (still a bit tight on space).

I had an 8 man Alaskan Guide for about 20 years and loved it. It weathered many high wind storms without issue.
I now have a Cabela's Instinct Outfitter tent. I think mine is a 10X14. I used it in WY 3 years ago on a solo hunt. It held up great to really high winds, like 70 mph gusts and about 30-40 mph sustained for about 24 hours. You just have to make sure the stakes are in the ground really secure.
The stove position is nearly in the center of the tent, so it sorta takes up some valuable space. With this tent being a double wall tent, a very small stove will provide plenty of heat. This tent heats up quick and holds heat well.
2 people would be the max for my tent. For 3 people for 25 days, I would get the biggest one of these available as long as it fits within your wt limit.

Eight man if in same tent. Get aluminum poles for sure. We had the fiberglass poles and they broke, tent collapsed, poles ripped holes in tent. And that was 4 inches of snow. We have had in in high winds and the aluminum poles get bent to shit, but at least they have not broke, yet. May want a plastic tarp to ty over it also, mine leaks in a heavy rain.

LaHunter that wind review is good to hear about the 8 person Guide tent.

I had not considered the Outfitter tent cause I heard about broken poles. Did I hear you correctly that your 10 x 14 is only enough for 2 people with a stove?

Just a reminder that it is just 3 of us so AZ Hunter I assume that the 8 person would be fine for 3 of us? From the sound of it a 6 person "Guide" tent is going to be tight for 3 people with cots?

The 8-person will hold three men on cots as long as you don’t go crazy with gear and nobody has really smelly feet. They are 25% off for BF btw.

Here is mine set up with two huge cots and a crap ton of gear. You could push those two ends closer together and then put the third cot on one of the sides with gear on the other side and under the cots. We eventually used totes to make a table in the middle.

Thanks Guns. It is hard to believe that an 8 person can actually be tight for 3 but when you show your setup it gets real. Of course one makes due with what is available and we got by with 2 guys in a 4 person for 15 days, but a moose camp for over 3 weeks of gray weather is made a bit brighter by some space.
Totes are a great idea for storage under cots and / or a table.

I noted you said they are on sale for BF (Black Friday?). I don't see that advertised on Cabelas.com. Is there another place to see it?

Ya. We weren’t trying to be really efficient because there was only two of us. It was also -5 at night with a high in the single digits during the day so we had to keep everything inside the tent to keep it from freezing. With some organization, especially buying totes or bags that fit under the cots, three people would be comfortable. I know others have done it.

Here’s the link to te cabelas/bass pro ad. Scroll down the page and you’ll see it. This is normal for them. It’s at least the third or fourth year in a row they discounted these tents for this week.

I guess 3 people could work in my current tent, but 25 days is a long time. Especially when you factor in Alaska weather, you will probably have at least a few days that you will be stuck in the tent. There is a larger model that they offer now that offers a little more room.

Thanks to all. The Cabelas Alaska Guide 8 person on sale for 25% ($137) off of $550 is pretty tempting. It seems to have all the right reviews and a tremendous history. I would like the Instinct version, given its larger vestibules, but that is not on sale and I have no idea if they every go on sale.

I would definitely go with the 8 person for 3 people with cots and gear. I have the 6 person and it's perfect for 2 people with cots and gear but would be REALLY tight with 3 people.

Like said above get the 8 man. I had the 8 man and 3 guys with cots fills it. I know have the 6 man and 2 cots is the max. Without cots 3 guys is ok in the 6 man. Its too bad cabelas quit selling the aluminum poles for these tents!

I have a six and it's barely okay for 2 after a day. The walls close in when the weather does. You cannot have too much room.

Thanks for the heads up Guns. I do already have an Active Junkyk account though so I am afraid I cannot reciprocate.

Swamp and Bruce, thanks for the confirmation on the 6 vs 8 for 3 men. That seals the deal.
