Last night the local Cabelas had their Friends and Family Night. I went with one thing on my mind; 10x42 Swaro's ! I have a bunch of points and some gift cards so I thought that the discount may get me close. I went right to the counter and asked the associate for the price on the EL's and SLC's. Well after a few minutes of scanning he looks at me and says the EL's are $2169. As I look in amazement and weakly ask, "$10 off?" He grins and says yes. He then tells me that the SLC's are $5 off. Sheesh! It hurts to be a friend or family member of Cabelas. No worries I can wait but thought it was a bit funny.

That's why I didn't go. I have never seen any significant savings during those events. Did you find anything else? All of the good stuff like guns, optics, and Sitka clothing usually carries a negligible discount. You're usually better off just ordering online and saving the taxes.

Yeah, I asked about a Cabela's exclusive Weatherby Lazerguard the last time I had one of those coupons and the current sale was better than the $30 off MSRP. I figured it would be more since it was an exclusive. Cabela's branded clothing or fishing gear is usually the only descent deals you get with the employee discount coupons. It is really just a big hoax to get you in the store though. Cause you can't even figure out what discount you'll get until at the register.

How are you guys getting the invite to "friends and family" type deals? Sadly, I've been a Silver card member for several years now, spending $10k+ on my cabelas Visa, and have yet to see a special coupon or get an invitation. Do I smell that bad?

You might double check with "Cabelas Club". I thought everyone who was a silver or black member got the discount. Like some of the others have commented, you are really not missing much. I bought a new B-stinger and it went from $70 to $55, about 20% but some of the other items are a darn joke.

Bill, I haven't gotten one this year and they are bad about promoting them. I know last year they had one for all Visa Club members, but I only found out because I was in the store. I am just a standard club member without the Visa as I don't want to take the hit on my credit report for yet another card I don't use and I got a coupon in the mail for 'employee pricing' last winter. They never do these deals online as they never want to post how bad the actual deals are just to get you in store. I noticed they stopped calling it employee pricing as I'm sure it wasn't and I'd be pissed if I was getting shafted that bad on employee deals.

Thanks fellas. I'm definitely not upset I didn't get included. Rarely do I ever find anything from Cabelas that I can't get significantly cheaper some place else. More curious than anything.

Yeah, I usually walk through the bargain cave and maybe browse around but don't end up with much. They do sell tall clothing, so I will sometimes grab some outerwear if I get a good deal. The other thing that bugs me is that they charge you for bulk fishing line if you buy a reel, whereas BP gives it to you free. I did pick up their 5 sided ice fishing hut (mansion) last year and it is 100x better than the old Clam hut we were rocking. I certainly don't but much that isn't Cabela's branded as it is much cheaper elsewhere.

S&S archery is having a 10% off sale this week, buy from them! Steve initially told me optics may be 5% off but I have since got an email saying no restrictions on the 10%. Free shipping + no tax!

Doubtful. Also, I'd rather go to Cabela's than Bass Pro. Next time you go to BP try and find anything on sale. It's practically impossible.
I too would rather go to Cabelas than Bass Pro because they are closer, but Bass Pro has a better selection of powder, primers, and bullets. It was the only place I could find R22, Federal primers, and Swift A-Frame. Neither place seems to be able to keep employees (large turnaround), and most seem to be high school kids that don't seem to have much knowledge in the dept they are working in. You are correct about not too much on sale at BP, but at least it seems to stock some of the items I need, but they have never sent any coupons for any discounts.
I just feel that Cabelas with their "you have to buy it to find your discount" (remember the 'you have to pass the bill to see what's in it' statement from Ms. Pelosi?) is kind of misleading and just a way to get you into the store.
I have heard and read on the Internet (must be true, right?) that BP is buying out Cabelas, just doing my part of spreading a vicious rumour.

That's odd; I don't think I've ever seen a kid working the floor at our cabela's, just the register. That being said they do have a high turnover (maybe on purpose) and most seem to not be overly knowledgeable, especially the new ones. I think they may intentionally modify the staffing based on time of year, so that may be the cause for the turnover. Bass pro has the guy who works at a fly shop in Estes Park work the fly counter in the winter, so it is really refreshing to get a good opinion even though he did recommend a fly rod (Grey's GR30, hard to find but amazing for the price) that they don't carry, so definitely not a good drone for them.

COlineman78, the one I visit is in Gonzales, La, about 30 minutes away. There were two "youngsters" working in the archery dept, when a customer approached and wanted to have some Easton shafts cut to size. One said, I don't really work in this dept, I'm helping "Josh". Josh said , "I think I can cut them down for you. Do you know what kind of glue I need for the points?" The customer put the shafts down and walked out. I'm sure this doesnt happen all the time. I usually shop there when I know what I want, and don't have to ask any salespeople for their "advice".
