Short version. Beware of buying guns from big box clowns.

So I live about 120 miles from a Bass Pro. I shop there now and then. Usually pop in when I find myself passing by on the way to something else. Last time was in May 2024. While I was there, they had a sale price on a handgun I had been eyeing, I had some points built up on my membership credit card, bought the gun and walked out with no problems.

Flash forward to December, and I am looking for a magnum research 22lr switchbolt for a new steel challenge boomer. A bit hard to come by and sportsman’s warehouse and bass pro are the closest options without doing an internet sale and paying at least 15% in shipping and transfer fees. Their prices are the same but I have some more points to spend so I buy it on bass pro and opt for ship to store delivery.

I go to pick it up and they tell me they can’t sell me a gun because my state issued drivers license lists my address with the abbreviation. “SR” and doesn’t spell out “State Route” like their computer wants it to. I show them 3 other forms of ID with “SR”. They look up and admit their own retail order system uses “SR”. They say, “sorry, come back with something that says “State Route””. I say “WTF, the deed to my house abbreviates the address SR. There is nothing I have that spells it out. You sold me a gun 7 months ago in this store.” After 45 minutes of listening to them tell me I should have Pennsylvania reissue my license and come back, I left. I spent another 45 mins on the phone with their customer service only to finally get to the store manager who is like “come back. We can try again later in the week”. To which I responded, “this is a 5 hour round trip. My license matches the address on my order form. I have never had any trouble buying dozens of guns elsewhere and I am not driving down here again to give it another try”. He even admitted that they have this issue more than once a week.

Flipping crazy that their response is have the state just change your license. Never gonna buy a gun from these ass clowns again. I hope their beef jerky and root beer candy sales are going well, because they suck at everything else.

That should have been no big deal. Certainly, you want them to be careful when transferring guns, but this is taking it a bit over the top. What did you end up doing? I don't think you can "return" guns, so did you cancel your order?

When you ship to store, you don’t “own” the gun until you do the transfer. They say a refund will take 7-10 days.

There are still a lot of small family owned gun shops that have better service and more firearm knowledge than Bass Pro/Cabelas.
Amen.

90% of my purchase are spread between 3 local shops. None of them could get this gun from their wholesalers and my experience with gunbroker sales has had a few hiccups.

All three of my rifles and several of my shotgun purchases have been on line. Grabagun, Kentucky Gun Company ( highly recommend! ) Bud’s, and Gunbroker. All have come off without a hitch. To me the biggest drawback, of course, is not being able to handle a gun prior to purchase. I guess I’m pretty “standard “ when it comes to gun fit. Most fit me. Only exception is comb height vs. scopes on rifles. Found I need cheek risers. One of the features I liked on my Tikka Super Varmint.

I've stopped even trying to shop BP , they never have what I need in stock and always say -We can order it for you - In today's world that's the same as F--k Off , IMO

They have gone down hill fast in the past few years. It seems like they used to have a wide variety of brands to choose from, now it’s just their line of products. I was excite to get a Cabela’s in town, now the only thing I get there is some ammo and panther martins when they have a sale.

I bought a gun from the bass pro in NJ back in august. Now, NJ sucks with guns to begin with... but awful experience behind the counter. Pretending to work.

Order ruger american gen 2 online. Get it shipped to store. They call and let me know it's in and everything is all set. I get there for opening,1 hour wait, great my turn, 45 minutes to sign paper work. Then they say it's averaging 3 day turn around time. Ok, sucks just drove 1.5 hours here, to turn around and go home and do it again next weekend.

Next weekend, same thing, there for opening. CHECKING THE PAPERWORK I DID LAST WEEK took another 45 minutes. I never signed another piece, i had paid the week before and had my receipt. It took 3 people 45 minutes to 'FINISH' my paper work.

It was just smoke and mirrors.

I show up with receipt, they look at my drivers license and verify paperwork, and verify serial number and a clean nics. Exchange pleasantries and leave with gun. Not sure how that process took 45 minutes.

I bought a gun last year from BP that was on sale, and had it shipped to the local store. It took about a week to arrive and then I went and did all the paperwork. Then had to wait 3 days to pick it up because of the ***clown liberals in our state government. So already waited about 10 days from the date of order/purchase online. So I show up three days later to pick it up, and they tell me that "BP has a 4-day wait period policy"......."to make things consistent for all states". What? Are there other states where you have to wait 4 days to pick up a gun that you purchased?

I’ve never bought anything from Bass Pro. Used to have a Cabela’s CC years ago but got rid of it when the writing was on the wall. I rarely buy much at Sportsman’s Warehouse either. Just little things here and there. I did buy a Ruger 22 for my son a few years ago online and shipped to my local store. Came in a week later, drove 20 minutes, did paperwork and walked out the door with it about 30 minutes later. No problems.

If the stars align I might buy a gun from BP. I get a military discount and if something I want is on sale then the price might justify buying from them. I bought an A400 from them awhile back. Took forever to wait in line and then get paperwork done. 2 1/2hrs if I remember. At least I was able to leave with the gun. Took a strategic route to avoid being accosted by the time share guy, again, and got the hell out of that miserable place.
