buying something really nice and not using it because it is "too nice".

Some of both, in general I use most things. My truck is worked hard, most of my guns are worked hard. There are however occasional things of extreme value which i "use" by enjoying them, and keeping them in phenomenal condition (Gold plated, hand engraved, ivory, that kind of stuff)

With family heirlooms it can go either way. Some things I know my elders would want me to use, some things i cherish by holding and cleaning.

My thoughs exactly. I use what i buy, but i have a few special items that get extea attention. Like my grandfather's .22 single shot rifle he bought when he was 12 to hunt squirrels. I use it, but only on special occasions. And it gets treated like it cost 5k. Things like knives and trucks get worked hard but taken care of when they get back to home base

I tend to hold on to things too long. But I have to agree with jmcmath oftentimes. Much of hunting gear takes a beating. That doesn't mean I don't try to take care of it, but I am not afraid to use my stuff. But I do have a Sako finn bear deluxe chambered in 338 WM that I bought in the early 80's. I took it on one hunt, and have maybe 2-3 boxes of ammo through the barrel. It's a complete safe queen that I should have sold years ago. I just never get around to listing it.

Ill admit, I'm more of a saver. I recently mounted a VX-6 that I had in the safe for a couple of years. Still haven't hunted with it. I grew up poor so now that I can afford some nice things I guess I might feel a little guilty that I might ruin something that was expensive. This thread has changed my point of view though. I like to build things and I would rather people use those things than just have them sitting around collecting dust. Great points guys.

I buy good gear/rifles/optics and use it. I don’t get the point in having stuff just sitting around.
