i see it all the time. call it what you want. "safe queen", "pavement princesses"..haha

i typically do not have that issue. it is kinda how i shop. i bought my truck from a guy that was "saving the miles". i just bought a knife from some guy that thought it was too nice to tarnish.

my truck is high miles now and has that nice desert patina. my first expensive knife i used it exclusively to butcher turkeys..i did falter at the side of a dead hog that we shot out of a mud puddle. that grit would have ruined the edge.

i'm going elk hunting soon. i am bringing one knife. the knife that was "too nice". i think i'll knock off that new knife smell.

my brother just paid $400 for a 300 WSM that the guy thought was too nice to take into the forest..wow!!

you save stuff? or just use it? (there are some nice knives in this group)

I shop the used market for nice stuff, new or lightly used, and then use it to its fullest potential. I have one youth 20ga shotgun I have only shot a box through, it’s fancy with gold inlay and such. But that’s about the only thing I’m “saving”.

I tend to buy stuff to use. If i dont use it I normally sell it. I see no reason to hang on to things that i have no use for or am too scared to use. Point being, i just bought a '18 ram and I'm getting ready to leave for idaho in a few weeks. There i no doubt it will get some rock chips and dings from the forest roads out there. The truck will have 10k miles on it in less then 4 months. That doesnt mean that i dont take care of my stuff, but i intend to use it if i buy it.

things that aren't getting used don't tend to have a long shelf life with me. if i'm going to pass on something to my kids i'd rather it have a story to go with it than having lived it's life in a safe.

I think about this every once in a while when I use something that had been handed down from my grandfather. I treasure those things and take care of them but I use them none the less. I want my children and grandchildren to have the same opportunity to hold a rifle or knife I used and think of all the adventures I had with it. Because of that I generally buy as high end as I can try to make it last.

As I get older I expect there will be items I treasure more than others that might get some special attention but I don't intend to retire anything I need just to buy something else.

The bed is getting pretty scratched up from hauling everything from garbage to my quad. Hunting season means mud, snow and dirt. I did wash it about 2wks. ago, first bath in about 9mths. Didn't buy the truck to show off to the neighbor, bought it to use, if I can't use it as above then it's useless to me.

I have a lot of bamboo fly rods and rifles that I don’t use, not so much because they’re too nice to use, mainly just because I have so many and I only have a few that I use regularly. I do have a couple very nice pre ‘64 model 70’s that I never take hunting, so they are “safe queens” and I’ll probably just leave them to my kids when I die. Hopefully they don’t sell them to buy drugs, or sell them for what I told my wife that I paid for them.

i do have a cherry side by side berreta shotgun i never shoot. it is a safe queen..mostly because i cant hit chit with it. that double trigger trips me up everytime.

When I get something nice for myself I have to use it. Typically if I don't start eating it in about 5 minutes it begins to melt.

Some of both, in general I use most things. My truck is worked hard, most of my guns are worked hard. There are however occasional things of extreme value which i "use" by enjoying them, and keeping them in phenomenal condition (Gold plated, hand engraved, ivory, that kind of stuff)

With family heirlooms it can go either way. Some things I know my elders would want me to use, some things i cherish by holding and cleaning.

My wife's grandfather was like that. Loved that man. I bought him a really nice multi tool for Christmas one year, I was in the marine corp and a couple hundred bucks was a lot for me to spend but I figured he had everything else. A couple months went by and I asked my wife what happened to the tool because I never saw granpa with it. She said he put it in a drawer because he was saving it and it was too nice to carry. The guy was in his 80's not sure what he was saving it for. He passed away a two years ago and as far as I know that tool is still in one of his drawers. This thread made me laugh a little thinking of him.

About the only thing I break out for special occasions (weddings and such) is a lil ol $20 buck knife that was a first anniversary gift, we were too broke back then to do much else. It's probably worthless as far as collectibles but has some sentimental value for sure.

I love using the hell out of great tools. That said i have about 150ish( i set a hard limit of 100 about 10 years ago...its hasnt worked ) custom knives from some of the best knife builders past and present, so most havent seen use. I do have about 20 users that are as good or better then my safe queens.
None of my rifles have seen the woods in about 15 years or so as i only bowhunt...so i quess they are all safe queens.
I think we do a disservice to the caftsmen when we dont use tools they built ..just me.

I do have a "new"model 37 Ithica Fully Ingraved with Pheasants,hunting dogs etc.Saving it as a keepsake...Hasn't missed a single season in Az.as far as Quail,Dove,Rabbit,and Squirrel.Best shooting shotgun I'll ever own.Hope my brethren like em'"tested".

Man, with the life I've had, what is left of me see's no use for things that do not offer a use. I am a frugal, tightwad out of necessity. I often buy used as cheap as I can get it. Then use it until I have worn it out. I do and will spend money on things that I need to. But, with what resources I have going to so many different places, I also will compromise when possible.
