I pull my 8,000 lbs camper behind my F150 with no problem. Made it to the black hills SD 12 plus hours couldn't do 80 added a couple of hours, would do it again. If I buy a 3/4 ton the wife would buy a bigger camper. Lol.
I love the new truck smell.

If it’s just for hunting and fishing on the weekends I’d wait and see what happens with the market over next 3 months

here's a thought experiment (and request for information, if you have any....)

remember, we all heard there were bunches/fields/stadiums full of trucks that needed IC chips to be able to be complete and available for sale??

So, what happens when those chips finally get delivered and those 2020 (2021?) trucks can finally be sold?

Some friends think that when that happens, car companies will be looking to dump those 1-2 year old vehicles.... maybe not cheap, but more reasonable than what we've seen lately.

Thoughts, please...

Buy a 20 year old truck with this current market. There are ones that are great and ones you want to run from.

My expertise is in Fords so I can tell you for your towing expectations, a 99-2003 F250 or 350 with a V10 or the same years with a 7.3l diesel. You could also tow your payload with a V10 Excursion.

If you can settle for an F150, any year f150 with a 4.6 is insanely reliable and long running. They might leak or burn some oil at very high milage, but it doesn't stop them from getting you anywhere you need to be. Any 5.4 before 2005 is essentially just as reliable.

Any post 2005 5.4l don't wast your time. Any diesel with a 6.0l or 6.4 don't even think about it.

I'm currently driving a 98 f150 extended cab, long bed. It was a fleet vehicle, has roll down windows and a bench seat. I'll drive it till the wheels fall off before I pay 10-15k over a vehicles value.

Believe after this May any that remain will be sold as used but doubt they fill the needs, will probably all go to auction and be spread across the country.

My 4.6 is junk and would stay away from it.

ETA…. My towing capacity is like 6k. Doesn’t take much to max that out.

Truck prices are pretty crazy. For no good reason other than my wife just got a new car and her old, but very nice Jeep Grand Cherokee is getting sold to my oldest son meaning I will continue driving our trustworthy, trailer towing 2013 Chevy 2500HD gasser for a while, decided to look at possible "upgrades." Have gotten a little envious with the trim level on her previous and new vehicle, and quickly established that anything fancy in a truck was just insanely priced.

The one exception I found was with WT level trims. In relative terms, 3/4 ton gasser work trucks are reasonably priced new and pretty available. I saw dealers with multiple in stock in the $44k to $49k range, and when you have eight on the lot, I'd imagine there's room for negotiations.

I just sold my 05 tundra with 195k because I came across a 06 with 50k with a pre covid price. All said and done it will be $3000 out of pocket and I probably would have spent that in the next year on maintenance items on the 05.
There's deals to be had if you keep an eye out for them.

Get a vehicle appropriate for the task. A 1/2 ton has no business being anywhere near an 8000# trailer.

Don’t tell that to my F150 that’s hooked to a dump trailer with an 7200lb excavator in it! It’s been hooked to that same trailer basically since I bought it 37,000 miles ago.

For the record it replaced a 2017 F250 with the 6.2L. The f150 with the 3.5 has more power, gets better fuel economy and rides way better than the 3/4 ton. Unless my little side gig needs a bigger excavator or skid steer I won’t own another “HD” truck. This coming from a guy that’s only owned HD trucks, until the last two only owned diesels.

Some guys like to paint with really broad brushes and lump all "1/2 tons" into the same basket. The fact is, there are several "1/2" tons out there more capable than previous generations 250/2500 trucks. In fact, my '14 F150 I used to drive had more payload than my Dad's F250 6.7 stoker.

My wife’s car gave out and wasn’t worth repairing. I gave her my ‘19 Cherokee Trailhawk (thankfully it was fully paid off) and I watched and waited for a long time. February of last year I pulled the trigger on a Colorado ZR2 Duramax with 0% financing. No regrets!

Just saw a commercial for 0% financing for GMC HD trucks, Very rare to see that offer on anything above the 1500's

I may be wrong, but from I’ve seen to get the 0% financing that’s for 36 months. You could always use that to refinance on but if not you’re looking at a significant payment

Just out of curiosity what issues have you had with yours. I've never heard of that motor referred to as junk, every single crown Vic that was a taxi cab or police car would get retired with over 400,000 on them. There are still hundreds if not thousands of New York City taxi crown vics with the same 4.6 driving around New York City getting the hell beaten out of them.

I bought the truck with 113k miles 6 years ago. At 155kish miles I lost a cylinder. I think I’m on motor 4 or 5 in the last 13 months. Very thankful I got a warranty on the replacement. In the original motor I had coil issues about every 8k miles. The last coil issue is what done the cylinder in. I’m sure the motor is fine for crown vics and the explorers. For the f150, I don’t feel it’s big enough. Outside of the motor being severely underpowered, the truck itself has been a good truck.

Buy an old beater and wait it out 1-2 years. Something cheap and semi-reliable as its not your DD. It has to come down at some point and with the interest rates and looming recession you should be able to buy new in the coming few years. I'm currently driving a high mileage Tundra that has had zero issues. My thoughts are drive it until the wheels fall off and hopefully the market had dropped by that point. I told my wife yesterday that I am so thankful we aren't in a position to have to buy a new vehicle at the moment.
