So for many many years I’ve been hunting and killing truck loads of elk with my 7mm with the 154 Hornady Interbonds (since discontinued)the only problem is that it is a HEAVY gun sooo I built a 300 win mag . And before you ask why I changed caliber well the only thing I can think is because I’ve never owned one. So my gun specs. 25” Lilja barrel on a tikka t3 action. The first bullet I tried was the 180 gr accubonds I’ve tried RL26 and RL 22 and the best group I could get was 1” I think I should get groups then 1” so I tried the 165 accubonds with RL22 at 3200 fps ended up being money.Does anyone use these for elk
I shot the 180 AB for years. I had it loaded fairly hot with H4350. Right around 3100 FPS. It was devastating on elk and mule deer and I killed several animals past 500 yards.
I ended up changing to a 200 grain AB and changing powders to H4831. It is very accurate for me, less recoil, and a very consistent spread of less than 15 fps. The 200 grain option seems to be a very good bullet for the 300WM. It is easier to source, and IME, create a load for.
You can also try H1000, which is what my hunting partners use, but also shoots around 2800 fps instead of ~2900.
The lighter bullets will be fast and potentially accurate. But you'll lose a lot of BC, which not only affects vertical drop and velocity over distance, but you'll lose its ability to fight the wind a bit. When shooting at any significant distance, it is often the reason why people miss or make a poor shot.
5 mph of wind at 500 yards is enough to move a bullet enough to miss or wound your animal.
