Lashan Tents are one of the go-to budget tents in the lightweight backpacking community. I don’t have any experience with them, but they may be an option to look into.

My willingness to rely on a budget tent is highly dependent upon the weather.

We took a 'Hyke and Byke, Yosemite 2-person 3-season' tent to CO last fall. Ended up not using it as I wasn't prepared to camp miles deep in tropical storm level rains. I've slept in it in the yard and it's nice enough but you *really* need to be aware of the weather forecast if you're gonna depend on a budget tent.

(What we bought was $63 last summer but appears to be about $95 now on Amazon)

I've gone through several 1p tents (name it, I most likely owned it) until I purchased the x mid solid in 2023. I run it as a tarp tent, no inner tent, with the ground sheet (tyvec would work too) from September to early November. I've been in all types of weather- Pouring rain for 48 hours straight during archery elk to steady 30 mph winds with gusts in the 50s during a late October snow storm. Without the inner tent, the 1p is downright spacious. Enough room for gear and a cook area. This is the one. For me at least.


Weight to space, footprint, and storm worthiness can't be beat, in my opinion.

You might check out the website steep and cheap. You can usually find good deals on brands like big Agnes, north face, etc. sometimes up to 60% off which will help you get more bang for your buck. Only issue is the tents they have is dependent on overstock from store locations. So you have to check regularly

The Mountainsmith Mountain Shelter LT posted above is a solid option, but it is floorless.

I have an REI Passage 2 that I would send you for the cost of shipping. It was weather tight last time I used it, about a year ago, and is the green color. Just shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Anybody use the Stone Glacier Sky 1P? They are on sale but you have to buy the tarp and tub separately.

If your looking for a budget tent I wouldn't bother looking at a hunting brand.

As mention above, lots of great options from REI, Big Agnes, etc.

+1 for durston. Can go floorless, topless (stargazer mode) and anywhere in between. Love my x-mid 2p.

I'm a diehard make-do-with-what-you-have sort of person but looking at their website that is a really neat looking tent. Thanks for the post.

I use a Naturehike Mongar 2. It's a knock-off of the Big Agnes tent but for <$150 it's going strong after 2 years.

North face Stormbreak 2. Perfect size for one person backpacking unless you’re over 6’2” or have a sleeping pad that’s thicker than 4” if you’re 6’. If so, the curvature of the tent means your head and/or feet hit the ends. Fairly light and occasionally on sale for a pretty good price. I’ve spent 30+ nights in mine over the last five years and looks new. Seen some good storms in it and never got wet. Quick and easy to set up and has dual vestibules.

I rode out some snowy and rainy nights in a Marmot Tungsten. Not sure what your weight restrictions are but it was a solid tent with a good vestibule

Not sure if this qualifies as a "deal" or a hack etc. But fedex just dropped off a box of peak refuel, mountain house, and backpackers pantry stuff from sierra and it cost me $0.60 out of pocket and figured I would share with RS. A while back I downloaded the capital one shopping app (it works kinda like active junky) but I recently just started really learning how to play the game. I order a lot of stuff online vs going to the store and if I do, I will typically go to the website and run the app on my computer and a lot of times it will give me 1-2% rewards back, but thats where the game...

Read this thread, thats how I got my durston for $45 out of pocket. By the time season gets here with an $80 referral bonus, you can easily have $250+ in rewards points buying stuff you already buy and theres no CC.
