BOW ADVISE, WORTH THE "UPGRADE?"

Hello everyone,

Background: Considering to "upgrade" from my current Hoyt Powermax I purchased new in early 2018, I'm 6'4" with a 30 inch draw (heard Matthews runs an inch shorter than Hoyt for same "length"). So short axle to axle bows are kind of out of question due to available draw length and string angle. Considering a Matthews Traverse/Hoyt Helix Ultra/BowTech SR6 since the price point will be great since the 2020 just dropped and everyone is raving about the VXR.

Bottom Line: Comparing specs on the bows there is not much advantage to any of the newer bows in the numbers, currently shooting 60lbs draw 31 inch 425 grn arrow (17% FOC) arrow at 275 FPS. The IBO speeds are not very different, the new bows are heavier or same weight, I haven't shot any of them to see if the "draw cycle, cams, back wall, or holding on target" is just marketing BS or placebo effect. I shoot pretty lights out with the Powermax, how do y'all choose when its time for an upgrade or y'all just keeping up with the Jones'?

Very Respectfully,
Andrew

I think you just answered your own question!

The new bows you mentioned are slightly more refined, but if you’re shouting lights out with your current bow stick with it.

I’ve chased the latest and greatest for so long but I finally decided enough was enough. In the past 5 years (2014-2018) I’ve owned more bows than I can count, most of them the current year model at the time. I’ve got a 2014 and 2015 year models as my primary and back up if that tells you anything.

I bought and used a PowerMax in 2018 also. I bought a Pro Defiant this year not to upgrade so much as so I could have a back up. I shoot the PowerMax as good as the Pro Defiant. I have e=them set up identically. Same sights, rest draw and draw weight. They are a little different but both are great shooters. The Pro Defiant gets the nod for primary but the PowerMax is a real close second and I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

They'll all shoot "lights out" if you do your part and you set them up right. I have a 2006 and a 2007 bow that will shoot lights out as well as my 2014 bow. They all just feel a little different. And I'm LH and shoot at 32 1/2" draw.

I switched from a powermax to a prime ct5. I switched because I can get the ct5 with 80lb limbs, and with the longer axel to axel I can hold steadier. I think the powermax is a really good bow, but if you're interested in upgrading I say go shoot a few and see how they feel

Being your height go shoot a few bows. Like the primer CT5 and the Bowtech Revolt X. After deployment I am getting a bowtech hands down with the cam lock they have. It's stupid easy to tune those bows.

I hate how every dealer sets up new shooters with the Powermax. At your draw length you definitely need a longer bow, I doubt your nose touches the string. Nothing wrong with the PM, but not built for long draw guys. All the bows you mentioned are fine. If you want something new, both PSE and Prime have 35 inch models this year. I think the Elite Ritual 35 would be an awesome option for you if you wanted a discounted model from last year.
