Great post and funny I just wrote an article about outdoor books for the pandemic. LOL
If looking for fiction
CJ Box as others have said Joe Pickett Series about a Wyoming Game Warden
Paul Doiron the Mike Bowditch Series about a Maine Game Warden
The Outlaw Gunner by Harry Walsh. The book about the colorful history of both legal and illegal market gunning in Maryland.
Game Warden- Chesapeake Assignment. Live the adventures and investigations into outlaw hunting on the Eastern Shore by federal game warden Willie Parker.
The Old Man and the Boy by Robert Ruark. A fantastic story about a young man growing up and learning about hunting, fishing and life from his grandfather.
Stories of the old duck hunters and other drivel by Gordon MacQuirre. I think you would be hard pressed to find any greater stories about hunting, fishing, and friends. One story is better than the next.
The Hardscrabble Chronicles by Laurie Morrow. A book about dogs, hunting, winter and the outdoors in rural hard scrabble New England.
Autumn Moons and Whitetail Dreams by Michael Duarte. A fantastic novel about a small township and its cast of deer hunters during the months of September, October and November.
Wild and Fair Tales of Hunting Big in North America by Thomas McIntyre. A fantastic compilation of hunts in the lower 48 by some of North America’s finest outdoor scribes.
A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. One the greatest books written about land, ethics, humanity, animals, sport and wild places. An absolute timeless classic for sportsmen and non-sportsmen alike.
The Green Hills of Africa of by Ernest Hemingway. One of the greatest American authors, and a passionate sportsmen the books encompasses Hemingway’s month long safari in East Africa. I read this book 30 years ago in South Africa and I look forward to reading it every few years.
The Horn of the Hunter by Robert Ruark. I do not think any one book on safari has been quoted more through time. Ruark captures the essence of safari, his interaction with natives, and fear and skill around hunting dangerous game. Even if you never go to Africa, it’s a book every hunter should read.
The Adventure of Shadrek by Ron Thompson. The true story of one of Africa’s most infamous and famous elephant poachers who evaded and outsmarted some of the best.
The Tiger: A true story of vengeance and survival by John Vaillant. While not in Africa, a modern day, hair raising tale of a man eating Siberian tiger and the man who is sent to kill it.
