Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose
Fantastic book. I'll never forget the part when they get to the continental divide and expect to look over and see the Columbia River valley but instead see the endless snow covered bitterroot mountains. Can only imagine their disappointment

My favorite part was when the Indians at winter camp tried to warn them about Grizzly bears. So the following spring, of course, they shot the first two or three they they ran across. They then decided to leave them alone and name the subspecies Ursus Horribilis.

I think Lewis’s exact quote was something like, “Our curiosity had been satisfied.”

Just checking my library, a few more:

Land of feast and famine - helge ingestad
Kambaku - Harry manners
Lost city of Z. - David grann (not really outdoors but good)
Told at the Exploters club - George plimpton
Safari - bartle bull
Fred bear’s field notes - a classic that always gets me in the hunting mood.
