Does anyone have some book recommendations for blacktail hunting in California Sierra Nevada Mountains or books about other areas that similar to California?

Boyd Iverson's stuff is must read blacktail material (in addition to Haugen), but is specific to timber hunting in OR/WA. Having tried both ways I prefer to ambush hunt blacktails even in country that is fairly glassable.

If you want to spot and stalk, read Dwight Schuh's open country mule deer book or Mike Eastman's high country mule deer book. Robby Denning's mule deer book is also great and emphasizes the importance of learning to hunt in the cover.

Big blacktails get killed every year in clear cuts and on burnt hillsides, but I think you increase the number of bucks that are killable if you're willing to hunt them like whitetails. It's kind of like elk hunting. Some bulls are killable with aggressive calling, other's don't play that game. Some big bucks will bed in more open areas early season. Others stick to the timber even in velvet.

Both Scott Haugen, and Boyd Iverson’s books are great. You can still get Scott’s book for a reasonable price.
Boyd’s Blacktail Trophy Tactics is starting to get harder to find, so the price has jumped. You can still check them out at the library.
You should read both.

I take that back. It looks like Scott’s Trophy Blacktail’s The Science of The Hunt has gone way up since he said on his website that they have no plans on printing more. I got a signed copy from him two years ago for like $20. Crazy.
Unreal?!

I just bought a copy direct from his website before last season... I guess he ran out

I did as well! Haven’t even turned a page in it because I bought this as a backup copy for friends to borrow. Looks like I may just try and sell it if they can get those prices. Specially new. I’ll just keep my old one for thumbing through.

Not sure if it has been recommended on here yet but the John Bacon book about the Edmond Fitzgerald called the Gales of November is very good. He provides detailed stories about the crew and families of the sailers, highly recommend.

Unfortunately none of the libraries near me carry either of these books and I'm not paying the prices being charged on Amazon and Ebay. I guess I will have to visit some used book stores and hope I get lucky.
