Does anyone have some book recommendations for blacktail hunting in California Sierra Nevada Mountains or books about other areas that similar to California?

Boyd Iverson's stuff is must read blacktail material (in addition to Haugen), but is specific to timber hunting in OR/WA. Having tried both ways I prefer to ambush hunt blacktails even in country that is fairly glassable.

If you want to spot and stalk, read Dwight Schuh's open country mule deer book or Mike Eastman's high country mule deer book. Robby Denning's mule deer book is also great and emphasizes the importance of learning to hunt in the cover.

Big blacktails get killed every year in clear cuts and on burnt hillsides, but I think you increase the number of bucks that are killable if you're willing to hunt them like whitetails. It's kind of like elk hunting. Some bulls are killable with aggressive calling, other's don't play that game. Some big bucks will bed in more open areas early season. Others stick to the timber even in velvet.
