maven b1 10-42 or….what’s better for sub-$1000. Low light deer hunting, often snow or grass terrain, not a brand loyalist, looking for what works. My c1 mavens surpassed my expectations big time, are the b1’s worth the upgrade?
B2 9x45 sounds perfect as I was considering 8x42Loved my C1’s, but since the price hike they’ve lost some of their draw for “value.”
I’ve read in the past that Maven’s B1’s left much to be desired optically. It’s the only design they’ve changed interestingly enough, and they now have the B1.2, which I’ve heard good things about.
If you want better low light, all things equal, exit pupil is what you’re after. Exit pupil is determined by dividing the objective lens diameter (second number) by the magnification (first number). A 10x42 has a 4.2mm exit pupil, a 10x50 has a 5mm. If the glass quality is the same, the 10x50 will have better performance in low light. A $150 10x50 will not out perform a $1500 10x42, but if the glass is the same quality then it will.
If I was buying another pair of Maven’s, I would buy the B6 10x50 or the B2 9x45 for the improved low light performance.
But hey, I’m just some random guy on the internet…
