All the way out when they are handheld and all the way in when glassing off a tripod.

I can be a lot more stable hand holding binos by using the eyecups extended against my face. When the binos are already stable on a tripod, I want as little interference as possible so I try to avoid touching the bino all together.

It makes me wonder if the guys who have eyecups all the way in when handholding are the same guys who say they can’t get stable? I’ve been told 12x binos can be impossible to hand hold, but I’ve never had an issue. I would never be able to handhold them without the eye cups extended though. Interesting. I’ve never even thought that there were people, other than eyeglass wearers, who didn’t use the eye cups extended when hand holding binos. Ha. But it appears that there are a lot of guys who feel more comfortable that way.

I used to always run them all of the way out. Once I bought quality glass I started keeping the eye cups in. It definitely gives me a better field of view.
