As mentioned putting them into freezer bags work well. I generally carry one or two of the MH packages to put the freezer bags in while they are cooking.

this is what i do, i don't like cooking them in the freezer bags, i put all contents into quart freezer bags as suggested and force all the air out. I then roll up two of the empty MH packages to use all week

Likely more than you care to know, but it's illegal in many states, for a good reason. And don’t give me that it’s only 1 bag crap. I only drive 1 car but so does everyone else. Things add up. How hard is to to pack out an empty plastic bag? Are you really that lazy? If I smelled you burning that crap in the wilds we’d have a few words for sure.

MAT , if you come into my camp suffering from diarrhea of the mouth I may have an epileptic seizure and you could be hurt by my flailing arms and legs. If I were you I'd keep my thoughts to myself five miles from anybody who cares about you.

I had a buddy that worked up in glacier national park and he would flip out about burning mountain house packages. They go in once a year and have to clean out all the burned up packages from the fire rings. The don't completely get consumed in a fire like a paper product does because of the foil used in the packaging.

I would also say that burning garbage in your backyard is completely different then burning garbage in a wilderness setting.

We just leave the regular 2 serving packages the way they came. Often hard to predict exactly how long we will be out, and the pouches are good for 7 years as long as they are unopened. Sure they are a little bulky, but nothing we can't deal with. Have considered using YK's method of taping some together, but never really felt like we needed to. The less work I can make for myself the better...

This +1 I'd destroy freezer bags. I just stack then in a sea to summit eVent dry sac along with meal bars and trail mix and stove and fuel inside Ti Mug. The sea to summit keeps all the food dry and has a D-ring sturdy enough to pull the whole chitbang up a tree to keep bears off it. To vacuum pack and trim seems like there would be no room for water. But I haven't tried it. I'm not gonna bring a pot or a pan and I'm not a Jetboil fan. I'm with Becca on this one.

I am a very bad person, I have probably burned several hundred in wilderness areas over the years.

I bet if you fished out every mountain house foil bag that has been burned by you Rosinbag it wouldn't fill an office trash can half full and the aluminum in the constantly burned fire pits in parks get fished out once a year. Obviously not a huge problem. Eventually they will corrode away anyway. Like was said earlier , burn it hot and it will be fine. Not burning it means having to store a bear attractant in your pack and manage when you camp. Cooked food residue smells much stronger than vacuum packed freeze dried does. To all you tree huggers driving your new prius with its colossal energy consuming to make battery and huge toxic waste when it needs to be disposed environmental disaster all I can say is get over yourselves.
And for those worried about all the pollution. Have you added in the waste and pollution caused by transportation of the trash , the filling of a landfill , the burning in an incinerator ? Instead of crying us a river over a minute amount of unburned residue and foil left go work on making a biodegradable and nontoxic to burn alternative at an equal or less cost. Make an equivalent function environmentally friendly bag and I'm all for it .

Now who has diarrhea of the mouth.

I'm far from a tree hugger. This is a hunting website. I have my share of backcountry bad habits, but finding other peoples trash in the wilderness happens to be a pet peeve of mine. My post was about trying to educate the uniformed and ignorant. I guess you being from the south I found my audience.

I didn't say just leave your trash . Burn it and burn it well and there is basically nothing left. If you can gather your tiny bit of burnt foil even better. As for me being in the south I'm no better or worse than most of the rest here as to burning my trash. I'm betting most members are burning theirs. There is nothing ignorant in my position. I simply looked at the big picture and decided that the best course of action was to burn may trash as it is created. You seem to feel that it would be better for you to carry your trash out and place it into the waste collection system so it can be trucked to a distant place burning lots of fuel to be burried or burned someplace else. In the end I'm betting the total pollution is a wash and you are assuming much more risk and inconvenience for nothing. What I find revolting is that you have decided what you feel is best for you and assume the authority to tell me what is best for me. Anything I burn that doesn't reduce to ash and is left is taken out by me. I have not burned a bunch of the bags but I will look and if there is much of anything left I will take it out also.

So you are finding unburt trash left ? Is it the heavily used campsites that bother you ? I'm not advocating leaving half burned trash and or any trash along the trail.

Rick , what is your problem with burned trash ? If it's burned there should be nothing but a bit of ash left . Backpacking in about the only thing I'm burning is a bag and a few bar wrappers. Burned in a hot fire I haven't seen anything left. I'm wondering what you are finding ?

Man, go to Colorado for a couple of weeks, with no Internet service, and things get interesting.

Oh, and I'm from the South.
