So last year I picked up a straight jacket to haul my saddle hunting gear with and I like the pack a lot. Going back chasing mule deer in sept and toying with how to load it out. The wing pockets have a limited capacity obviously so I’m using a dry bag duffel for most of my spike camp gear, and it seems to get wide quick depending on how I load it and with what duffel. Planning on going in for 3-4 days, then coming back out to resupply for the rest of the hunt. Pack weighs 42 pounds without food/water so expecting to be in the 60 range. As of current the weight feels fine but the width seems like a lot. Over 24 inches wide. Would that cause you an issue?
Once I get in and set up camp it’s not really an issue as a day pack.
So my options I can think of are 1, suck it up it’s only in the hike in or 2, get a different bag that’s taller instead of wider. Although it doesn’t seem that much wider than the bedlam I carried last year.

When it comes to comfort under load, which mostly relies on efficiently loading your pelvic area, it's always better to go tall before you go wide.

I agree. I found out the hard way through thick brush... Adjusting setup for next season...

As much as I like my straight jacket for my whitetail setup, I picked up a gnargali for out west and it loads much better.
