Evan Felker is a brilliant lyricist. Hopefully he can get back to writing songs again someday. "The Bird Hunters" is one of his finest:

The covey took wing
Two shotguns a-singin'
A pointing dog down in the old logging road
Danny got three and looked back a-grinnin'
I fumbled around and tried to reload
The country was cold with the sun westward sinking
It's good to be back in this place
With my hands around a Belgian made Browning
My mind on the lines of her face
The Bird Hunters hits home hard. Small town rural politics and the BS that goes with it.
Everyone has to have a soft spot for an old Browning as well.
But if she’s worth it, go for it.

I’ll be damned. That’s a good tune. Never heard of him.

Aaron Lewis - Country boy

Cause the biggest things in life are your friends and family
And I like my jeans and my old t-shirts…

I got a big orange tractor and a diesel truck
And my idea of heaven is chasing whitetail bucks
And as a country boy, I know I can survive
Now, two flags fly above my land that really sum up how I feel
One is the colors that fly high and proud, the red, the white, the blue
The other one's got a rattlesnake with a simple statement made
"Don't Tread On Me" is what it says and I'll take that to my grave
Because this is me
I'm proud to be American and strong in my beliefs
And I've said it before but I'll say it again
'Cause I've never needed government to hold my hand
And I've said it before but I'll say it again
'Cause my family's always fought and died to save this land
And a country boy is all I'll ever be

If you are really interested in lyrics you should check out Harry Mack. He’s a freestyler that is unbelievable. I know rap isn’t for everyone but everyone should be able to appreciate this guys cadence and rhymes considering he is making them up as he goes.

It actually takes a lot of time of subjecting yourself to cipher sessions in the circle of gettin' called out before you can do even marginally smooth flows off the top o' the dome. Because each rapper, from writing a whole bunch, and cool things made up in the moment from other battles... they'll start to develop a lot of "canned rhyme parts" you might say that they can pick and choose from and sometimes slightly modify in the moment to fit the scenario immediately going on. Also you have to have a very critical eye and listen of your opponent so you can possibly tear into his sh*t hard and make him look whack when it's time for your rebuttal. An example would be like if he painted himself into a corner during the rhyming and kinda choked with a pause for a little. As an example.

Also in battles you have no idea WTF beat/track they're gonna bust out with next during the battle! Sometimes even mid-sentence! So the vets have to be completely on their toes and able to change and morph from among many styles during the night to respond to changes in tempo, tone, mood of the tracks they might elect to drop live in the moment as the background beat to rhyme over. And some of the DJ's involved really dig the crates for particularly odd beats sometimes. Kinda cool cause it gives it a high difficulty rating in the challenge it presents.

Turnpike Troubadours were something else. I wish the fiasco that caused the breakup could be turned around. I secretly keep hoping they’re making another album now that Felker sobered up.

But there’s often a connection with raging alcoholism and great writing. Like Isbell was when he first got booted by the Drive-By Truckers

“The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea”

Long down the Louisiana byways
Lonesome highways roll on
Oh, won't You take me where the poor man lives
It's where I call my home

Can't you see that breeze
Nothing but a change in pace
Money can't buy my soul
'Cause it comes from a hard-earned place
That's a great song. Ryan Bingham had a lot of good stuff

Such a great song! One I also love is Family Reserve. Lyle is a great songwriter.
