One other thing you may want to consider is do you want to shoot steel. I occasionally hunt state wildlife areas where steel/non-toxic shot is required. But if I didn't or when I don't, the older gals can get some lovin'. There are tons of beautiful older O/U shotguns available on the used market for reasonable prices because everyone seems to want the new hotness. WRO mentions a lot of these above, like Sauer, Zoli, Rizinni, Guerrini. And slvrslngr mentioned SKB. They are also great guns that deserve a walk in the desert. I still have a bit of a weakness for Ugartechea Spanish SxS guns, even though I don't shoot straight grip guns quite as consistently. There are non-toxic options you can use in these guns. They are pricey. But if you own one, those old gals deserve to be fed and hunted too.

You can find used Beretta 686 models for under $1000 if you're diligent. Check your sources several times daily and be ready to buy the minute a legitimate deal comes along.

But make sure, there's lots of scammers.

Will 2nd the classic winchester 101 if you can find it, may be a little more than your budget. Not sure of these new Belgium made 101s, the classics were from japan. It will put most other o/u’s in that range to shame. Found the browning and weatherbys to just be disappointing compared to the 101. My family has a handful of the 101 o/u and 23 sxs that we have been shooting since the 80s when they were made. Ive shot a bunch of the other guns mentioned and wouldnt trade the 101 for any of them. The function, quality, and fit when it comes up is perfect. It almost doesnt feel fair shooting birds when the gun becomes an extension of me.

There isn't a quality O/U available for $1K new, and finding a quality used 20 gauge will be difficult at that price unless something is wrong with it. You might get it done with a lot of patience, but you would have an easier time if you looked for a 12 at that price or upped your budget to $1.5K. Used, of course.

I picked up a SKB made Weatherby for a groomsmen's gift a couple years ago, I think it was 1100 all said and done. It is a great gun and shoots well. If memory serves the SKB made Weatherby's use the same chokes as a Citori.

Those Japanese made SKB's were a good gun, and kind of underrated on the used market. Might be the OP's best bet for a good $1K 20 gauge. I'd sure buy one at that price. The only down side is I don't believe SKB provides parts for the Japan produced guns anymore.

Your best bet is a used bl3/bl4 Beretta..

This is an early guerini for 1k, for another 400 you can send it to briley and have 5 chokes, you won't touch a guerini for that anywhere..

Careful on the sauer guns though, the sa3/sa5 zolis leave a little to be desired, but the b.rizzini and guerini guns are ..

I just bought a orvis Beretta for a little more today or i would've bought that one.

The best resource for in the market is Greg Campanelli at the orvis pro shop, great guy who has forgotten more about o/u shotguns than most know.

My purchase today..

I swung by my local sportsmans wherehouse today. They had one o/u in stock, a stephens 555. There were about a dozen people in front of me so I did not stick around to handle it. This is all new to me, as I use an 870 for all my bird hunting. Keep all the great info coming. Im trying to digest all the information I can.

Stear clear of the Turkish guns imho, I'd take a used 391 Beretta over crappy o/u..

I found a brand new Browning Cynergy Feather on gunbroker last year for $1200. Its amazing...if you are patient you can find good deals. Mine has the gray synthetic stock with black inserts, which is good for me since I hunt pretty hard. I can buy a nice wood stock from browning if I want to down the road.

One of the guys I pheasant hunt with has been shooting a Stevens 555 for the last few years. He loves it, never had any issues with it. Its not a Browning or Beretta, but for the price they are hard to beat. I think Mossberg makes one as well in that price range that a lot or people like.

If you are not married to an OU - the benelli UL semi auto with the carbon fiber rail is amazing. You can get those used for a decent price. Just thought I would throw that out there. One of my other buddies runs one of those in 20ga. So light it feels like a toy gun.

I’d recommend the weatherby 32” Orion if you’re thinking about trap or skeet. I barely have any experience but it makes me look pretty good next to some very expensive shotguns. Not just me , my son was hitting with it first time ever. Stiff to operate but I’ve had quite a few guys ask what I’m using

There are some good Turkish guns out there if you look for them. The Weatherby by Orion is one of them. O/Us are simple reliable guns. Even a Turkish Yildiz will fire 10-20k rounds without a hiccup as long as you use some snap caps for dry fire practice. I wouldn't write all these guns off based on a statement like this. I have nice guns and beaters, but my beaters are reliable guns that get shot and hunted a lot. Evaluate your own hunting needs, try to get some guns in hand to see what fits you, then buy what you like and don't worry if it impresses anyone else.

I'm sure there's some good ones, but they feel cheap and clunky to me compared to good Italian gun. If it's only going to shoot 2 shots, it better be sexy and light, because it sure isn't winning on form or utility where a good auto or pump wins (3 vs 2 capacity and weight)..

When I bought the Orion I read that Adam weatherby had some guys shoot the crap out of it before he sent it to market. I like the vanguard rifles so I figured I’d try the Orion and I’m glad I did. I can’t speak for the shorter ones but the 32 makes me look pretty good. I did take a couple of my old pump guns out my first time and was only able to hit a couple. I have noticed guys having issues and not able to hit anything with some other brands that would definitely lead to a bad image
