The rebore and cut down from 24" to 21" barrel all up cost me $275.

As for what I will use it for...just depends. I think to keep things fair for my 308 and so it won't get jealous I think the 308 will get used on sheep, deer, and caribou hunts while the 338-06 will be used for black and brown bear hunts and mountain goat hunts as well.

Yeah and hopefully elk someday! ;)

Nice that's actually way more affordable then I would have imagined.

After all my research thinking about what to do with my '06, I'm going to get it rebored from Jes as well and make it a 338-06.

Yeah me too figured it is quite a bit cheaper than a rebarrel. Now just need to find a 25-06 to bore it out to 6.5-06!

Oh it lets ya know when it goes off! But shot 50 rounds yesterday and my shoulder felt like I had gone shooting but no bruising or anything. It's kicks for certain but def manageable.

Alaska hydrographics dipped it. It's my first dipped rifle so not sure on durability.

If it holds up well I might make my Kimber montana in 308 match it.

Here's a shot of my Wby Ultralight weight in 270. It weighs 7 lbs 1 oz scoped and all loaded up with 130 grainers.

This rifle has seen some mountains and killed some critters.

Here are a few pics as we hid in the willows on the final leg of a stalk to dump a dall sheep in AK this past season.

IMHO you can't beat a 1st generation Remington 700 Titanium in 260, 7 08, or 308. Very accurate, light, made by Remington Custom Shop, adjustable trigger. If you want to lighten it up even further throw a McMillan Hunter's Edge fill on it to save a few ounces. Damn good rifles. The Alaskan Ti was a pound heavier but I have one in 300 Winchester (that was not offered in the 1st gen) with a Mickey Edge on it and a Leupold 4.5-14x40 w. a CDS dial that is good to 800 yards with a 200 yard zero that is not a heavy rifle at all. Just depends on how much juice you want.

Luke I really like what you've done with this rifle. I've been reading the 24Cf thread as well. I think for what you wanted this gun to do it's perfect.

I own a .35 Whelen but it's 8# 4 oz I love that big heavy 225 grn bullet and reaction from animals. Just wish mine weighed closer to yours.

Thanks man....still have the option to turn it into a 5.75 pound gun scoped if I want, but the VX-6 is pretty nice! Especially the FOV it offers while still going up toe 12X. I think I am keeping it for now. Its purpose built for sure and most people will want a flatter shooting rifle no doubt, but I don't shoot that far so I just wanna get inside 400 yards and drop the hammer with a 210 or 225 grainer in a gun that is lightweight enough to feel like a toy. Seems to fit those needs ;)

Within 400 yards that will do all you'll ever need. That gun should easily become a favorite over your .308 once you see the impact reactions from animals.

On a separate note regarding bullets...I watch shooters pro shop for seconds/blems and I'm slowly switching all my rifles over to 2nds as the cost is too good to pass up.

After having killed multiple elk with 160 grn AB from my 7mm all under 80 yards, I finally came to the conclusion for how I hunt a .33 or .35 would be much better suited for those applications. So I bought the Whelen and it shoots both 225 TSX and 225 AB MOA or better @ 100. My son used the TSX load on his blacktail at around 30-35 yards, nice big holes and very minimal bloodshot.

Awesome stuff here. Luke you have inspired me to trim weight off my Rem Mtn 270. I have it at the gunsmith getting trued and bedded. I found a couple guys on eBay that flute bolts and skeletonize handles for fairly reasonable prices. Hoping to have the total package under 7#.
