I hunted first rifle in Colorado this year because I had conflicts during archery season and it was very cold. Down around 0 and I froze in my new Big Agnes Blackburn UL 0 degree bag with insulated pad. I ended up wearing pretty much every item of clothing I had and was still cold. Anyone have a suggestion for a good bag for backpack hunting when the temps get down to 0? I've been looking at the NF and Marmot in a -20.

western mountaineering, feathered friends, stone glacier...buy once cry once...these bag makers temp ratings are pretty true

Yeah I've been looking at WM, but damn they're expensive! So any of those a 0 degree should be in the ballpark if I'm wearing base layer and socks?

I use the kuiu 30 degree with clothes works great!

I'd say any of those 3 bags are pretty true to temp...I have a WM Kodiak...great bag

I spent a night outside on a thermarest ridgerest at 0* with no cover and stayed reasonably comfortable in my ultimate thule....it was pretty new at the time and I haven't tried to tempt fate since. I have a WM badger that is easily true to temp with room to spare.

0 degree bag with insulated pad.

Which insulated pad? Self inflating pad or air pad?

The pad is almost as important as the sleeping bag. I was surprised how much cooler the air pads were when compared to the self inflating pads. I mean, it brought the temperature rating of the given bag by 15-20 degrees!!

I hunted Colorado 1st Rifle this year as well and it did get damn cold 1st couple nights. I was running a Nemo Sonic 0 degree bag with an Exped UL Downmat 7 and had no issues staying warm with just my baselayers on along with a thin Black Ovis merino hat.

I’m a huge fan of my Nemo Sonic 0 degree bag. At 25 degrees I never had the vents closed and once the initial ‘warm up’ was over I usually unzipped the thing. The Sonic comes in a 0 and -20 rating but the nice thing is that it has two really large vents that run the whole length of the torso (no mesh or anything, it’s a section where the down isn’t as thick so it doesn’t create a draft, just a thinner area for heat exchange). It has a very good and soft ‘cuff’ for around the neck that will help the main body warm up while the mummy portion that goes around your head is awesome and comfy. It also has another vent/gill thing so you can moderate heat for your head separate from your body. If you are MIL/LEO they have an awesome Pro program as well.
I paired mine with a Nemo Tensor Insulated pad and didn’t have any issues. I will also mention that I tend to sleep sprawled out on my side and the bag did good for me for room and I slept in boxer briefs only.

Being cold and not sleeping can put you in the truck early. Spend the money on the wm type bag. Worst case they hold their value when you sell. Dont mess around with cheap bags.

I had never heard of Wiggy's before today. They are on sale right now for $130 for a zero deg bag.

Thanks for the info on the Nemo...seems like people are happy with that pack and I do get a deal on them so that always helps!

Check out Outdoor Vitals compare their specs.

Nemo Sonic 0 degree
720g of 800 fill down
61” shoulder girth
3lbs overall weight
$499.99

Outdoor Vitals Summit 0 degree
730g of 800 fill down
62” shoulder girth
2lbs 6oz overall weight
$269.97

As you see this is pretty much an apples to apples comparison. And as far as features they are the same except price.
I just bought the -15 degree Summit long version. And it’s specs are

1080g of 800 fill down
68” shoulder girth
3lbs 3.5 oz overall weight
$309.97

This is a limited run and they are out of the regular. But as a side sleeper myself I find the long versions more comfortable and warmer.

I don’t know why this company hasn’t gotten a lot of publicity? It is a relatively new company ( 4 years I believe ). They put out a high end bag at half the price.

WM Kodiak with 7" of loft is so cozy it isn't even funny. As I say that, I have not taken it down to 0 degrees. For me I like a 10 to 20 degree buffer on my bag rating vs expected temperature

Those outdoor vitals look pretty nice! I did see a fair amount of people complaining that a lot of down comes out of them. Any issues with that yourself?
