I hunt northeastern Kansas and south central Colorado. I ground stalk deer and I’ll trap if it gets cold and snows. I go hard for the deals. I run super hot and hate being constricted, I never wear underwear and sleep naked. Most of the time the mid layer is my outer layer.
Base layers
-Some merino long boys from TJMaxx
-Kuiu merino short sleeve I found at a second hand store in Lawrence, Kansas $7
-Whatever smartwool socks are on sale of varying weights, will wear pink.
-If I know I’m going to be getting wet, I like a pair of Patagonia wading socks.
Mid-layer insulation
-Duck camp bamboo long sleeve
-First Lite merino hoodie found at a thrift store in Breck, $35
Quiet/durable outer shells
-Wrangler quick dry outdoor pants that have been waterproofed with a silicon spray
-The old model Browning brush pants
-My outerwear top is usually a camo hoodie in realtree max-1 xt
-I’ve got a Patagonia down jacket in a sage green that I’ll wear when it gets colder.
Accessories
-I like the primos lightweight gloves with the textured hand. The glove goes up well past my wrist bones, which I really like. I’ll cut off whatever fingers that need to be bare skin.
-A pair of wool mittens that flip up for exposed fingers. My wife knitted the ones I wear now.
-Some sort of beanie
-I have a neck gaiter I will use to cover my face or to hold my long hair back
-First Lite leafy mask
-This isn’t a clothing item, but I use the skyweight utility chest pack from 5.11, many of my clothing decisions are made with this harness in mind.
If it’s really cold I’m wearing carhartt bibs and whatever warm chore clothes are around with heavy gloves or mittens and a fleece neck gaiter. This is what I will usually wear trapping and rabbit hunting.
This is the kit I’ve ran for three years now. If took about three years to dial in. It’s comfortable, durable and pretty cheap. This is my go to for my terrain, rarely am I above 9000 so my gear doesn’t have to be as rugged or insulated as some guys on here that are definitely rocking way harder than I am.
