Best all around Caliber??

Maybe if rokside was representative of the hunting community as a whole. But it’s not.
But Rokslide is extremely well-representative of the hunting community that has loads and loads of experience. It is also representative of those who have been able to work themselves past Fudd-lore and start doing things an entirely different, far more efficient way.

Kinda like turbo 4-cyl hybrid engines of today being way more efficient and way more effective than the old guzzling V8s of yesteryear. Today's racecars are easily faster than the old ones. Same with today's .223 - 6.5mm cartridges kill every bit as well as any old blunderbuss but do it more efficiently and with far less recoil.

Since you already have a .270, the answer isn’t a .308 or an ‘06. Too close, hair splitting.

Since you already have a couple “six point whatevers,” the answer isn’t something less than thirty caliber. Why would you buy a “seven something or other” when you already have a couple “six point whatevers?”

So the answer has to be something bigger than thirty, but not a magnum because it’s to be an all around.

The answer is a big(er) bore like a .35 Whelen or a 9.3x62 - an ‘06 case opened up to .358 or an ‘06 case opened up to .366.

Don’t like that answer? Buy more ammo for what you already have.

But howdy, howdy, you’re from Texas, so…….

What you have is just fine. However, change can be good. My favorite caliber is .284 and my do-it-all cartridge is the 7mm-08. It works especially well if you handload (you do handload, right?). If you want a little more "wallop", the 280AI gets it done.

I live in Texas but hunt out west as well. If you had to pick a caliber to do it all everything from Texas whitetail to Bull elk what would you choose? 308, 7mm-08, 7mmPRC, 30-06, 300wsm? ( i already have a 6.5cm, 6.5prc, 270. Just have the itch to buy a new rifle. I don't Wana hear save your money and buy more ammo for the guns I have lol)
Your current lineup provides an awful lot of overlap with the cartridges you're considering, the .270 is typically just as available as 06 and .308 so has that covered and none of those will do anything positive for an elk's life expectancy. An underappreciated giant killer option that often shoots well is the 160 grain partition in the .277. it's semi Spitzer and stabilizes pretty well in the typical 1-10 twist of .270s. The 308 doesn't usually shine as well with the 200 grain and heavier options like the .30-06 and .300wsm, but none of those are bad choices.
I'd consider either something smaller think .223 or faster 22 center fire, maybe a 6 arc or 6.5 Grendel or move to the opposite direction a nice medium bore or maybe lever action of your preference.

I already replied that 270 does everything necessary for NA game. In practicality there's no difference in the "critter gitter" factor between the 3 you already have. "Bigger" will do the job, as will smaller. But how much will you shoot a 300WM compared to something with less punishment and cost potential?

SO if I were you, I would think about what you want. What sounds fun? What will you shoot a bunch? Whats cheap to shoot and you dont have to search for ammo?

Personally, I have a 270, 308, 2x 6.5CMs(one was a gift) and I doubt ill use it for hunting but a 91/30.......if I look for anything else, it will be smaller, probably a 223, 22ARC or CM most likely.

edit: somehow I usually forget it but I do have an AR 223 Wylde. I need to spend more time with that thing.

Also, dont overlook a nice, accurate 22LR if you dont have one already, CZ seems to be the go-to factory gun around here. BUCKETS of fun and a great training tool.

The best all around is .270 Winchester. Lighter recoil than 30-06. Flatter shooting even than the new wizz bang 6.5 creedmoor. Easy to find on shelves, and forgiving if you want to reload.

I've double lung shot a whitetail at 340 yards. Wide range of bullet weights is possible, but I stick to 130gr as is tradition.
