Hey guys I was wondering what some of your arrow set ups are for elk hunting. I planned on getting a new arrow set up trying some new ideas i have a 70# with 29.5 inch draw. I planned on shooting a 150 grain bh with 25 grain jack and insert. But I didn’t know what spine I should use what are y’all thoughts ?

250-300 spine depending on arrow length. Many folks default to cutting the arrow shaft the same as their draw length, but you can go significantly shorter if you don't mind having the broadhead behind your grip hand at full draw. That scares some folks, but it's not a problem as long you keep your grip hand fingers down and out of the way.

By "jack" do you mean a jacket that slides over the outside of the arrow shaft (aka, collar/sleeve/footer)?

I recommend that you keep that broadhead weight down to 125 maximum and add weight via arrow weight (GPI) or insert/outsert weight (if you want to add FOC). I say this because finding 100-125 grain broadheads is a lot easier than 150+. You will limit your options by going 150 grains. For arrow spine, I would say go with 250s. Even if that is slightly stiff, you are generally better over spined than under.

Yeah that’s what I meant the collar i just couldn’t think of the name and I use a 31 inch arrow but I’m sure I could use a 30. Could I get away with using a 300 spine or use the 250?

If using a 125 then would I use a 300?

Here is an estimate on what a 300 spine cut to 28.5in looks like.

This is a 335IBO, 50gr insert and 125gr BH.

I think 300 would probably work, but if you're wanting to leave them that long with 175+ gr on the front, 250 would be a better choice.

Hard to say unless I know what you want to cut you arrows to. You are right on the edge of a 250 and 300 spine arrow. I would say you are closer to 250 with your draw length and poundage. It also depends on how much weight you want to put up front. The more weight you put up front, the stiffer the arrow you need. Provide your arrow length and what weight you want to put up front (along with gpi of your arrow) and I can give you a better answer, but I will say 250 spines will be your safest option. Then you can load the front a little more and not get too much flex.

250 gives you a tougher hunt arrow…they tune just fine…its a no brainer

Then BH tune even if you shoot mech heads

Yeah after looking around I figured I’d go with a 250 plus there’s nothing wrong with it being a little stiff

I shoot #70 at 29.5" and my arrows are 250 spine with a 100 grain head, arrow cut to 28.5". The 100 grain head is easy to find anywhere as another stated so thats my go to grain. My arrow is cut so my broadhead is middle of the shelf so its important to keep your form correct and fingers down. I found the 250 spine tuned better for my setup than the 300 spine. My total arrow weight is 523 grains for my Victory Vap SS shafts and 500 for the Victory Gamer shafts.

I just had made up some 250 spine RIP TKO’s with a 75 grain insert and 100 grain heads. Should be just under 500 grains
Matthews Lift 33
80lb mods
31” draw
My old 300 spine arrows tuned just fine though, I would think you will be good either 250 or 300

You can also trim your arrow down. With a 28.5 draw, you can probably get close to 27 inches for total length. With my 29.5" draw, my arrows are 28".

.300 spine, 50 grains of brass, 125 broadhead. TAW is ~520.

Having a 29.5" draw length and shooting 31" arrows is absurd. I have a 31.25" draw length and my arrows are 29.125".

My arrow is as follows:
Easton ACC 3-71 cut 29.125", RPS 14gr insert, Uni Bushing, G nock, 4 fletch with Flex Fletch FFS-212 vanes, and 125gr tip. 454.4gr total. 13.52% FOC

Updated to add FOC per Victory FOC Calculator.

yeah I was planning on cutting them down to 30 instead of 31 and with a 300 spine I’m still looking to get 200 up front so 125 grain broad head with 50grain insert and a 25 grain sleeve I should be good to go wouldn’t you think?
