Barney’s frame packs

Are very many of you guys still using Barney’s frame packs in 2025? A decade ago, they were still the gold standard for monster loads. The pack bags look great but again are also pricey. People used to suggest that they were overkill for anyone but Alaskans hunting moose, but I’m mostly hunting elk and hauling gear for backpacking trips with kiddos.

Would love to hear more about what people think of Barney’s as an option these days. They’ve also changed their hipbelt - would particularly like to hear from anyone who has used the new version.

I use mine to pack out moose quarters, I just have the frame, no bag. For that it works great. I use NRS cam straps to hold loads on the shelf. It been going strong for about 10 years now.

For hunts where I’m backpacking I have a different pack but no reason the Barney’s would t work. They weigh more than an exp or SG but they probably carry weight better.

I've used the Barney's Frame for about 20 plus years now hauling moose out. I've used the old, thicker padded belts as well as the new model. I much prefer the new, thinner and more contoured belt, it's far more comfortable on me, especially with the biggest loads. I setup the same as Thinhorn with a series of NRS Loop straps that are connected to the frame. I haven't found a faster or more secure way to keep big loads stable.

I need to get one of those belts. You’re not the only one if heard/seen say that it’s better than the older one.
