Barnes vs berger

I've never had excessive meat damage using bergers. Especially around 2800 fps. Missed the fact you are wanting to use a 260. I could not seat them close enough in a 260 to hit lands and stay in the box. That would change things for me. Either perhaps a 135 hybrid if the nose profile works better than the 140 vld or go to a 140 accubond.

My 260 is becoming a 6.5 creedmoor due to the throat and magazine issue.

Answered your own question. mtmuley

mt muley you don't seen an expansion issues coming in to play with Barnes?[/QUOTE]
Don't know. I don't shoot Barnes in a mono, I use something else. Look at the Barnes recommendations. Seems odd to not use a one hole gun for long shots. Do yourself a favor and load that RUM with a 200 grain Accubond over Retumbo, RL-25 or another slow burner. I guarantee it will work up close, and far away. I've done it. mtmuley

I used to shoot the 200 gr accubonds, I shot my bull with it this year at 448 the bullet never made it through the shoulder, that's why I switched, that used to be my favorite load 9t.5 grains of retumbo at 3250

Interesting. I've killed 14 or 15 bulls with that bullet in a .300 RUM. RL-25 at 3200 fps. Yardages from 42 to 586. Flawless. Messing with the Hammer Hunters now. mtmuley

130 AR hybrids are another good one for your situation. I shoot them in a x47 that has too much freebore for VLDs. 135 CH shoot well in my SAUM.

If I were the OP I’d shoot some 230 target hybrids in that RUM.

rum shoots too good with its current set up looking for a bullet for the 300 wsm and 260 would be the caliber that I would change bullets in

if you're looking to go lead free, I'd use CEB or Hammer over Barnes. The 90 degree edges of Barnes drive bands just rob it of BC compared to those two or the Bergers. CEB is the best long range bullet out there.

Berger 130 AR Hybrids are a great bullet for the .260. They have a short bearing surface and can be run fast. They are extremely accurate.

I’ll be the odd man out, but I use Barnes exclusively and have taken a lot of animals with them without fail. Tremendous confidence with Barnes. I just don’t like the terminal performance of the Berger’s even though many have with great proven success using them. I just can’t get past the concept of how Berger’s are designed to work. Just not for me....

Have had some issues with expansion and weight retention with the Bergers, for that reason I have switched to Barnes for my hunting bullet at those ranges.

No bullet design is 'perfect' or a 'do all bullet'. Each of us hunters must understand the limitations of of the bullet design we use and proceed accordingly.

I have shot a lot of Texas hogs, some of considerable size, so make your own judgments. I built a 284 win last year for use at long range with 180 VLDs. I shot one Christmas at 854 lasered yds 300 lb boar 1/4ing away. Entered 4 ribs behind shoulder, exited at front point of off shoulder with a baseball size hole. Probably 16 inches of boar, I have pics. Next day I shot 3 more all about 200- 275 lbs at 345yds,401yds and 225yds all with similar results. I think a 185 vld to 210 vld at 300wsm velocities would do well.

Barnes and Nosler etips - tried Bergers for a bit but got tired of picking the lead fragments out of my teeth ...
