Badass Tikka Builds

7 PRC for me. Just bought a barrel so chambered a few weeks back. Have run half a dozen fast .284's with great success through the years.

The BC is intetesting, but have read reports of heavy bolt lifts and other overpressure signs with them, so not sure its the best idea with extant actions? Time will tell on that. Further, I don't need more performance than I can get from a 7 PRC; honestly, I don't even "need" that much. An 18" 6.5 CM or 7mm-08 can accomplish about anything I need out of a big game riffle, and I should be building more lightweight, handy, short action rigs instead of more long range magnums, but a guy likes what he likes.

Shared this before, but this is my walking hunter in .270 win that is a sub .5 MOA shooter with some factory ammos when I do my part. The barrel action and mag are all that’s factory on this one.

Right at 7.5 pounds w/o the bipod. Could do the UM action lightening and get it nitrided eventually.

100 years young but the 270 is still the Finger of God at reasonable hunting distances. Almost 1500 ft/lb at 500 yards means there isn’t much more needed from an accurate hunting rig for most of NA. I’m building a 280 AI but it really feels redundant by this guy!

I’d like to do the Cortina ethical hunter challenge at 500 yards with this.

If a 270 is enough, then so is a 6.5 CM, which carries more, further with less recoil.

I appolgize for upsetting you. Wasn't my intent. It's just ballistics.
What do you mean by a 6.5 CM carrying more further than a .270? You’re right about the reduced recoil, but the .270 carries more velocity/energy to basically all practical distances, no?

“carries more, further” What world do you live in? Given similar barrel lengths and factory loads, the .270 Win stomps the 6.5 CM ballistically in every single category past 600 yards, fact.

If you want to talk about rivals talk about the 6.5 PRC to which the Win is the equivalent to 500 with better frontal diameter.

The CM ain’t even close.

Just because the ammo cost $2.50/shot doesn’t mean it’s a better cartridge.

I appologize for a poor choice of words; looking at it again, I can see that the intent of my statement, which was that higher BC bullets carry more engery/velocity farther, and that a 6.5 CM is ballistically close to a legacy 270 after a certain distance, depending on the projectiles being compared - was not conveyed. I own and have taken game with both, and I can't say that I've noticed a difference in game reaction; however, I do notice a difference in recoil.

I wasn't claiming that a 270 isnt a fine cartridge capable of taking game in most hunting scenarios. But in terms of a 6.5 PRC vs a 270win, the reality is that a .697 BC 147 grn .264 started at a similar velocity to a .526 BC 145 grn .277 isn't really much of a comparison in terms of drop and, more importantly, wind resistance. Certainly, there's higher BC .277 bullets, but they arent being sent out of legacy configured 270 win's.

I have 6.5 CM's and a 6.5 PRC. The main reason I see to run a 6.5 PRC over CM is to take higher impact velocities for solids out further. Otherwise, a 6.5 CM loaded with 147's offers lot of performance for a little recoil.
