Backpacking Pants

I've done some multi day backpacking. I understood the question.

A cheap pair of gym shorts and track pants are sufficient for most summer backpacking. Most cheap athletic wear is perfectly suitable for the task.

My point was that it is not necessary to spend $70-100 on a pair of Prana Zion soft shell pants for backpacking. It is a viable option.

Of course people should be prepared for different conditions. Cold and wet is a dangerous combination even in summer.

I wear Sitka Ascent pants for all my summer outdoors activities. Hiking, yardwork, habitat projects, etc. They fit and breathe great. The typical EB guide, attack pants, kuiu katana, prana zion, etc dont breath well enough for me in warm weather. I freaking hate shorts doing anything where vegetation might be rubbing my legs. Also hate the increased amount of crap that gets in your shoes or boots with shorts and dislike gaiters.

Arcteryx gamma pants. They updated the fit with the new release (used to be the Gamma LT). If it’s really hot, they’re a bit much, but for high elevation stuff where there’s still chance of wind/rain/cold, they’re a sweet balance of weather/breathability. Excellent fit and features. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why the hunting brands haven’t added built in belts. Zero chafe points, way more comfortable under the pack hip belt, and you can tighten them up infinitely as the material changes with sweat, and your waist changes across the course of a trip.

My only concern would be a belt buckle on top of a belt buckle (backpack belt over pants belt)/ Any issues there with clicking/rubbing? I'm guessing no given your endorsement, just wondering if there is a downside (beyond the cost).

No issue, that built in belt is the best thing since sliced bread haha. It’s so thin and flat it feels like nothing is there. Cost is the downside. There’s also the Gamma SL for an even lighter weight option.

Nice. I might have to try on a pair.

Overall, I wear hiking pants pretty much every day, including at important work meetings, so I like to have items that are durable, versatile, comfortable, etc. I'm at work in my office right now wearing the same Kuhl pants that I wore on the John Muir Trail last July.

Wow first I've checked back on this thread. Thanks for all the replies. I've backpacked in shorts, don't love it. I've had wrangler, EB Guide Pro. Really was just looking for recommendations for good hiking pants that don't have to be hunting pants. Lots of recommendations for Prana Zion, seems like there's different versions of this pants, which ones are you using?
