Backpacking fishing gear

I just take a 4 piece 4wt fly rod, one small box of flies with lots of different dry fly options and some woolly buggers, 1 to 2 spoils of tippet, one extra leader, a rubber net if I know there are decent sized trout. I love walking a stream but high alpine fishing is hard to beat. I have a buddy that has fished glacier several times and always has some great pics and videos to make me jealous.

I have a 4 piece St. Croix 4wt. fly rod that I just love. It works great on streams and rivers, but being only 8' long it's very hard to cast that far out into a lake, but that usually is not too big of a problem for most of the places I go. I made a fly rod tube case for it out of a plastic fluorescent tube light protector (found at Home Depot and similar stores). Although not very strong, it is super light, and it protects my eyelets and rod as long as I'm careful not to crush it. I strap it to the side of my pack with the bottom in the mesh pocket with my water bottle. My fly box is a really lightweight foam box.

Yeah, I think a 4 piece, 4wt is the ideal backpacking setup for alpine lakes and deep backcountry fishing. I run 5wt line on my 4wt rod do I can cast a little further and deal with wind a little better, but I do agree that sometimes if frustrating not getting quite enough reach in lakes. Though, if the wind is at my back and not too strong to overtake the backcast, sometimes, I impress do myself with the reach. Of course, willow so becomes the bane of your existence when long casting alpine lakes.....

Gotcha. I don't flyfish but was thinking of getting a small lightweight spinning combo to take. How the miles shakeout on our hike it seems like I will have a lot of time to fish. Guess I need to see what all I can fit into a chest rig.
Check out the dock demon rods.
